Produce from Pembrokeshire’s hedgerows and gardens is helping Anne-Marie Harries to create a stir in the county.

Anne-Marie, who cooks for her family’s Farmers Arms pub in Mathry, found her home-made jams, chutneys and preserves were flying out of the bar when she put a few jars up for sale.

Within weeks, requests were pouring in from customers eager to savour the pots, and the Farmers Food at Home brand was born.

It now offers 25 different varieties, featuring flavours including sloe and crab-apple, rosehip, plum and blueberry and green tomato.

“It was just a bit of fun at first, but people kept on coming back for more, and I sold nearly 500 jars in September and October,” said Anne-Marie, 38.

She was inspired to experiment with the preserving pan after blackberry-picking while walking the dog, but she never realised that the venture would expand so quickly.

Demand for the Farmers Food at Home range has seen Anne-Marie busy harvesting in the garden and foraging in the countryside, with the help of her sons Rhys, 7 and Osian, 5.

“The most popular is the chili jam, but I’ve had really positive feedback on everything,” she said. “I can’t believe how it’s taken off.

“I’ve been selling at Christmas fairs, but it’s mostly been over the bar.

“We’re well known for our good, home-cooked food at the pub, so creating Farmers Food at Home really fits in with that.”
