You have the chance to join in free workshops at Carew Castle and Tidal Mill today as part of National Mills Weekend.

A corn dolly making activity will be taking place in the Tidal Mill between 2.30pm and 4.30pm. The drop-in sessions are included in the price of normal admission and there is no need to book.

Carew Castle Manager, Daisy Hughes said: “Community life would have revolved around Mills such as this for centuries and it’s great to be able to celebrate this important part of our local culture and heritage.

“National Mills Weekend also marks the end of Real Bread Week and you can learn all about how corn was brought to Carew Tidal Mill to be made into bread with the help of interactive display and a colourful mural which was painted by local school children.”

The mill at Carew is the only restored tidal mill in Wales and one of just five in the UK. There is evidence to suggest that a mill of some kind has existed on the site since 1542, with the present building probably dating from the early 19th century.

Though the mill is no longer in operation, the building is open to visitors and the machinery, exhibition, audio commentary and family-friendly interactive displays show how water has been used as a source of sustainable energy through the centuries.

Carew Castle and Tidal Mill is open 10am-5pm every day (last admission at 4.30pm). The admission fee includes entry to both the castle and tidal mill.
