THE chains of office were handed over in Fishguard last Tuesday as Cllr Janet Wyer became Mayor of Fishguard.

Cllr Wyer is a trade union stalwart who has worked for Pembrokeshire County Council for nearly three decades.

The mother and grandmother said it was a real privilege to be mayor:

“I am committed to supporting and representing the communities of Fishguard and Goodwick to the very best of my ability during my term of office,” she said.

“Mike Mayberry set the bar high during his term, and I hope to continue in that vein. Times are changing and we need to change with them.

“I'm very fortunate to have the support of a committed team of town councillors, who I am looking forward to working with in the coming year, and of course with the support of our newly elected Deputy Mayor, Cllr Jordan Ryan.”

Cllr Wyer succeeds Cllr Mike Mayberry as mayor.

Cllr Mayberry’s first weeks in office were rocked by controversy when he was arrested on suspicion of drug driving just days after taking the chains of office. Dyfed-Powys Police did not subsequently pursue charges.

Despite this former mayor Mayberry said there had been plenty of highlights to his year in office, including participating in the Round Table Children in Need bike ride, watching Goodwick Brass Band in St Davids Cathedral, delivering a speech in Welsh at the community Hen Galan concert and a speech in French during the Loctudy exchange.

“I am glad I kept going and stuck to it,” he said. “Thanks to all the people who supported me and enabled me to do it. I couldn’t have kept going without those people; members of the public who got in touch to say they supported us and wanted to keep going as well as family, friends and fellow councillors.

“I wish Cllr Wyer good luck and hope she enjoys her year as much as I did.”
