A west Wales man is facing a life prison sentence after he admitted this afternoon a string or rapes and sexual assaults on two young girls.

His wife denies charges of sexual assault against one of the girls and she will face a trial.

They attended a plea and trial preparation hearing before Judge Keith Thomas at Swansea crown court.

The woman was too distressed to enter the dock while her husband was entering his pleas and her hearing was delayed.

The man, from Whitland, admitted 12 charges of rape, as well as sexual assault, assault by penetration and inciting a child to engage in sexual activity.

He also admitted taking indecent photographs of one of the children.

His barrister, James Hartson, said his client understood the eventual sentence would "probably be" one of life.

He will be sentenced after the trial of his wife and was remanded in custody until then.

His wife then denied seven sexual offences against one of the children, as well as cruelty to that child and taking indecent photographs of her.

She cried uncontrollably during the hearing and wailed as Judge Thomas remanded her in custody until her trial on a date to be fixed.

The man and woman involved cannot be named to protect the identity of the victims.
