City honours returning troops

Hundreds of people lined the streets of St Davids yesterday (Wednesday) to welcome soldiers from the 14 Signal Regiment home from Afghanistan.

Led by a regimental band, the soldiers from 22 squadron paraded from The Grove to Cross Square. Welsh and Union Flags were waved proudly at the roadside, as schoolchildren, members of the public and other soldiers cheered our brave boys home.

The mayor of St Davids, Cllr David Chant, then handed out medals to soldiers returning from their first tour of duty.

"My task today is simple but very important," Cllr Chant told the soldiers. "It is to thank all of you for all you have done on behalf of our country.

"It is difficult for us, your families and friends at home to imagine what you have been through. We thank you all for your hard work, and what you do on our behalf. Thank you."

The officer commanding 226 squadron, Major Ben Fitch, then addressed the dignitaries and crowd.

"Despite an arduous and often extremely dangerous tour it gives me great pleasure to tell you that all the squadron has returned safely," he announced to cheers and applause from onlookers.

"I'd like to thank you all...especially the people of St Davids for hosting this parade today. I know I speak on behalf of the whole regiment when I say you have our heartfelt thanks for your continued support for our servicemen and their families at these very difficult times.

"14 Signal Regiment has a long standing history of co-operation with St Davids and we hope to continue to be able to foster that relationship and be able to count on your continued support in the years to come."
