A DISPERSAL sale of two Pembrokeshire Jersey herds saw a top price of 1,600 guineas achieved in front of a packed ringside recently.

Some buyers had travelled from as far as Middlesex and Northamptonshire to swell the crowd of chiefly Welsh buyers for the sale of the Gem and Graceland herds of Gary, Mair and daughter Hafwen Griffiths at their farm near Maenclochog.

Trade for the milking section was very good, with VG87 Hillhoath Mini Ophelia, who had calved for the third time seven weeks earlier, attracting the top price of 1,600gns. The successful buyers were G. R. Griffiths and Son, of Clarbeston Road.

The same buyers paid 1,500gns for the top-priced calved heifer, Gem Tresor Amy 1st, which had been calved nearly four months.

A total of 17 cattle made 1,000gns or more, while recently served heifers sold to 720gns and maiden heifers to 600gns.

Heifer calves sold to 550gns for the five week old Graceland Guapos Dolly, out of an EX92 (3E) dam and a VG86 grand dam, to the Glanmor herd of Dafydd and Helen Cox, of Laugharne.

Principal buyers J. R. and S. Howie bought 23 cattle for their herd at Uxbridge, near London.

Averages: Cows and milking heifers (62) £976 (with 20 heifer calves at £277.20); served heifers (13) £535.50; maiden heifers (21) £353.50.
