ST MARY’S Church in Carew has received initial support from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for external fabric repair and a new heating installation.

The main project aims are to repair the failing areas of the fabric and structure in order to protect this historic building for future generations.

Development funding of £9,700 has also been awarded to help St Mary’s Church progress its plans to apply for a full grant at a later date.

The project aims to carry out essential repairs mainly to the tower of the 14th Century church, a Grade 1 listed building, together with improved rainwater disposal. In addition, the installation of new under-pew heating together with improved access and historical interpretation will help ensure a welcoming and comfortable environment for both current and new users, increasing access for the wider community.

Priest-in-Charge of the Carew Group of Parishes, Revd Carolyn Wood said: “We are delighted that the Heritage Lottery Fund has given us this support. St Mary’s Church is of great importance in the community, especially due to its historic close links with Carew Castle. The support from the HLF will mean that link will continue. Also, that we can continue to be the spiritual home and place of worship for the local community, preserving all of that heritage for this and future generations.”

Richard Bellamy, Head of the Heritage Lottery Fund Wales, said: “Places of worship are among the UK’s most historic buildings, with fascinating stories behind them. Thanks to National Lottery players, this money will pay for urgent repairs at St Mary’s Church, whilst also helping to tell the stories of this special place to visitors. As a result the building itself will be more used by the whole community, and properly cared for into the future.”
