AFTER keeping the triathlon world on tenterhooks for weeks, the winners of this year's 220 Triathlon Awards have finally been revealed.

The Wales Triathlon, which took place in Fishguard on August 3, 2013 was shortlisted for the best race of the year (under 500 entries), and was announced as the winner at a gala dinner held on March 1.

The event beat of stiff competition from Aberfeldy Middle Distance, Ashbourne Duathlon and Ilkley Triathlon, which were also in the category.

The course began in Fishguard Harbour at 7am with a 1.2 mile swim, a 56 mile cycle to St Davids and back, followed by a 13.1 mile run around Fishguard.

The event was a Welsh middle distance championship, which attracted a mix of elite athletes and first timers, many of which were gearing up for Ironman Wales, which was took place in Tenby just a few weeks later.

Scott Powell of Activity Wales Events said: “The race that takes in St David's and the Cathedral, Trefin, Mathry and the towns of Fishguard and Goodwick I think shocked a lot of people. Not only for the beauty of the course, but the crowds that spilled out onto the course too.”

Matthew Evans from Activity Wales Events added: “Pembrokeshire is the perfect destination for a world class middle distance race, and we have pushed hard not only to drive quality of experience for athletes and supporters at races, but also value.”

Entries are open for the 2014 Wales Triathlon in Fishguard on August 2. Visit www.walestriathlon.com for more information.

Last month Activity Wales Events confirmed that Fishguard will be the location of the World Qualifier for the UK Ocean Lava Middle Distance Championship.

It will line up alongside Madrid, Gran Canaria and Denmark; with a potential of Honk Kong, Holland and the Ukraine being added to the race list later in the year. 24 athletes will qualify for the grand final in Lanzarote, to be held on November 8, 2014.
