PEBBLES are the inspiration for a unique art project that is teaching young people with learning difficulties the skills they need to set up their own business.
Students on the Bridging and Cornerstone courses at Pembrokeshire College have been working together to create original paintings, prints, cards and other products, inspired by the natural beauty of the Pembrokeshire coastline.
As part of a seven-week project titled Pebbles Pembrokeshire, students have been scouring beaches for ideas, before turning their ideas into saleable products.
They were then given advice on planning, budgeting, pricing, publicity, and developing a website to showcase their work.
They also worked with local jewellery maker Sara Lloyd-Morris to create a range of silver pendants, which they hope to sell locally and online, with profits going towards funding future Pebbles projects.
Heidi Baker, art lecturer at the College, said:“The art that we are creating is bringing students together and equipping them with a set of skills that will benefit them whatever their future direction.”
Bridging and Cornerstone courses are designed to help over-16s learn a range of essential life skills, such as food preparation, animal care and health and beauty.
Any local craftsmen happy to talk to the students about their business can contact Heidi by emailing h.baker@pembrokeshire.ac.uk.
