A NEW service has launched in Pembrokeshire, bringing together the needs of people with the needs of dogs.

Supporting People and Pets Through Opportunity and Training (SPPOT) opened dog daycare earlier this month at Simpson Cross Community Hall.

Currently running on Thursdays, the pilot scheme is run entirely by volunteers who have each completed more than 100 hours of hands-on training.

Each dog receives their own individual handler and can enjoy a day of fun walks in the two acre meadow next to the hall, interactive games, training and treats.

SPPOT committee member Nikki Roberts, said: “SPPOT is a community interest company which provides opportunities for people who are furthest from the job market.

“Our learners have been doing accredited training with Agored Cymru and dog daycare is about giving them the opportunity to practise the skills they’ve learned, as well as improving their health and mental well being.”

Nikki added: “Today we looked after a Japanese Chin for an 87 year-old woman who was struggling to look after her. I told her to come to SPPOT because part of our aim is to help those who have the love to give.

“The dog spent the day with us while the lady went to have her hair done. She came back to a dog which had been walked and she went home smiling.

“That’s a great feeling that you’ve helped change that lady’s life because she’ll be able to keep her puppy.”

Carla Lou Harries is one of the learners. She said: “My life revolves around dogs.

“My confidence has soared since I’ve been here. One day I would like to be a dog groomer or a dog trainer.”
