Carningli/Newport WI’s meeting on February 14th ran on more sober, thought provoking and compassion inducing lines than is usually the case. An excellent talk by a representative of the Samaritans made sure that everyone's attention was focussed acutely on what was said.

The Samaritans provide a telephone listening service for anyone in deep distress of every kind, who feel that in a moment of crisis, they have no-one to turn to. In any one year five million people contact the organisation.

The Speaker briefly outlined some of the harrowing troubles people can find themselves in and stressed the anonymity that prevailed. Samaritans also train people in the prison community to listen to their fellow prisoners. After the talk, the speaker was thanked warmly for coming to expand members knowledge of this valuable service given by the Samaritans. Then to lighter moments over tea and biscuits.

The next meeting will be held at the Boat Club at 7.30pm on March 14th. New members and visitors are always welcome.
