PANCAKES and promising ideas made for a flipping good Shrove Tuesday at Foundry House, Pembroke.

The Pembroke Can Make a Difference (PCMAD) group and friends gathered to enjoy a feast of pancakes - not only with lemon, syrup and Nutella, but also with the Climate Week One Hour Challenge.

This year’s challenge was ‘Get us out of hot water - come up with an idea that helps people use less energy heating buildings and water’.

The room was buzzing with ideas, drawings and laughter, and the volunteer cooks kept the pancakes piling up.

Ideas ranged from showering with a friend to designer thermal clothing that only needs washing once a week, solar panels, wind turbines, ground source heat pumps, and using the energy from beehives.

“We had a really good evening”, said Rosey Mitchell, chair of PCMAD, which is a sub-group of Pembroke 21C Community Association.

“Taking part in the Challenge is central to the aims of PCMAD, which are about reducing our impact on the environment.

“It was good to take a fun look at this serious issue, especially after the dreadful winter we have all had and with building resilience to climate change now so essential.”
