A VISIT to Pembroke Dock saw the return to family roots for a former First Sea Lord and the author of a new book about the town’s Royal Dockyard.

Admiral the Rt Hon Baron Alan West of Spithead and author Lieutenant-Commander Lawrence Phillips called to see the Pembroke Dock mayor, Councillor Jane Phillips, last Monday (March 10).

Baron Alan West, a former First Sea Lord, has strong connections with the town where his great-grandfather worked at the Royal Dockyard. And Lieutenant Commander Phillips was brought up in Pembroke Dock before embarking on a long and successful career at the Ministry of Defence.

They were back in town for the launch of Lt Cdr Phillips’ new book, Pembroke Dockyard and the Old Navy, A Bicentennial History, which provides an authoritative account of the yard and each of its 260 ships, including five royal yachts.

Admiral West also visited the Pembroke Dock Sunderland Trust’s current headquarters at the former Fleet Surgeon’s House in the Royal Dockyard.
