A PLANNING application to install 400 solar panels on the roofs of two Second World War hangars at Pembroke Dock has been submitted to Pembrokeshire County Council.

The Port of Milford Haven’s application relates to the Grade II listed Sunderland hangars at Pembroke Port. It seeks full planning permission and listed building consent to install 400 one-by-two-metre polycrystalline solar panels.

The hangars are used intermittently as engineering and storage sheds. The array will cover about 500m2 of each of the roofs.

If approved, the panels are expected to produce 95,000 kWh of electricity per year, the equivalent of more than 42,000 tons of CO2 every year.

A planning document submitted by the applicant stated: “The purpose of the installation is to ensure the sustainability of the site continues by producing more renewable electricity for the site and substantially mitigate the need for grid sources electricity.”

It added that any visual impact would be “outweighed by the economic, social and environmental benefits of the proposal”.

The deadline for comments is April 16.
