THE family of a 13-year-old Lamphey girl who tragically died last September has celebrated her birthday by donating £8,000 to two causes close to their hearts.

Former Portfield School pupil, Laura John, was diagnosed with cerebral palsy when she was two-months-old.

Following her death, Laura’s family set up a charity in her memory called Laura’s Legacy.

With support from friends and the community, they have raised more than £10,000 for Withybush Hospital children’s ward and Ty Hafan children’s hospice.

On Thursday (March 27), the family marked what would have been Laura's 14th birthday by donating £5,500 worth of medical and play equipment to the children’s ward and £2,500 to Ty Hafan.

Speaking at the hospital, mum Dominique said: “It’s a day of mixed emotions. It’s exciting and I’m proud of everyone, but I’m also gutted and devastated at the same time.

“It’s our second home here – they are not just doctors and nurses to us, they are family. They are very, very special to us.

“Over the years, Laura was never a patient, she was always Laura."

Laura’s dad, Wayne, grandma Diane Boswell, younger brother Dylan, aunty Samantha Osborne and two cousins, Tryan and Tae, were at the hospital.

“Laura was always smiling. She was absolutely incredible,” said Wayne.

Samantha added: “You can sit at home and cry, or get out there and help the people who helped Laura.”

Senior play specialist Sandra Jones said: “We will always remember Laura she has been a big part of our lives and she still will be through Laura’s Legacy.”

The next fundraiser is an Easter bingo evening on Sunday, April 13, at Tenby Rugby Club, from 6.30pm. Children welcome.
