A STREET pastors’ scheme in Pembroke took a huge leap forward last week.

A large group of Christians from nine different churches agreed to establish a scheme in their town at their second meeting.

Rob James, pastor of Westgate Evangelical Chapel, Pembroke, is spearheading the scheme with Rev Geoffrey Howell, of Hundleton.

He said: “We have spent time reflecting on the way Street Pastors operate both locally and nationally and believe the time is right for us to offer its immense benefits to the people of our community.”

And there are plans to extend the scheme further – a representative from Bethel Baptist Church, Pembroke Dock, attended the meeting and it is hoped another scheme will be set up there “when the time is right”.

Street pastors’ is a late night outreach service to people in need. Last month (March), the group met Rev Les Isaac, who pioneered the first street pastors’ initiative.
