THERE was great excitement at the Welsh Assembly in Cardiff recently when two pupils from Pembroke area were declared winners of two separate Rotary District competitions.

Firstly, Pembroke Dock Community School pupil Rhys Lewis won the competition to write a poem commemorating the Queen's 90th birthday. This winning poem has been sent direct to the Queen at Buckingham Palace.

Secondly, Finley Bruce a pupil from Golden Grove Community School won the Junior Young Photographer competition. The theme this year was Our World is Beautiful, and Finley had taken his photograph while on holiday in North Wales. His winning entry will now be entered into the Rotary National GB final.

Both pupils were presented with their certificates by Paul Davies AM.

Rotarian Dennis Jones from Pembroke Rotary Club, who had organised the local competition, said he was “absolutely delighted” to have two individual winners from the Pembroke area, as, during his many years as organiser, the Pembroke area has produced individual winners but never captured two separate categories.

The competition covered the whole of the South Wales area, which included 73 Rotary clubs.

“This is truly an exceptional achievement for these two youngsters," Dennis added.
