PUPILS at Ysgol Dewi Sant are being encouraged to improve their vocabulary by taking part in Scrabble sessions.

Before the school broke up for the Christmas holidays, the librarian Mrs Morris organised a Santa Scrabble tournament.

16 pupils took part and the outright winner was year 10 student Abigail Beckett, who received a book token as her prize.

Mrs Morris said: “Abi is an avid reader and a worthy winner of the title as she displayed her vast knowledge of vocabulary.

“This only goes to prove that reading is to the brain what exercise is to the body.”

Following the popularity of the tournament, a Scrabble club has been established, taking place in the library at lunchtime fortnightly.

Meanwhile at Ysgol Dewi Sant, a host of past and present pupils are to be congratulated on their achievements.

Anton Matthews has been chosen to play rugby for Denmark, and was presented with his shirt during school assembly. Anton has been attending training in Denmark and plays his first game against Hungary in April.

Moritz Neumann earned a Welsh Cap for lifeguarding, while George Raymond and George Hart received ties for playing in the Scarlets under 16s. Stephanie Harries and Jasmine Joyce received their under 18s Welsh Ladies Rugby 7's shirts.

Rhian Perry, Ben Sutton and Stephanie Harries have been presented with certificates for becoming Gold Sports Ambassadors, while Hywel Churchill, Morgan Williams and Ben Leach have become Silver Sports Ambassadors.

Year 8 pupils also achieved first prize in the Pembrokeshire County History Competition, with Geraint Pickard-Skeates and Ffion McEvoy winning with their projects on Upton Castle and St David's Cathedral.
