ENERGY-SAVING measures at Folly Farm have helped the attraction to claim an eco-award.

The Green Key accreditation promotes sustainable tourism and environmental responsibility.

In recent years, the attraction has invested in a quarter of a million pound solar panel system on the roof of the vintage fairground, reducing the amount of energy used by 40 per cent.

The park also switched the 13,000 light bulbs in the fairground to low energy versions, reducing energy consumption by 75 per cent and saving £20,000 a year.

Most recently, energy-efficient hand dryers were installed across the park.

Said managing director Chris Ebsworth: “As a responsible zoo, sustainability is at the core of the business. It’s increasingly important we adopt a grween approach to the way we operate, and Green Key offers guidance to implement sustainable changes and support, with our goal to become progressively self-sufficient.”

Keep Wales Tidy’s chief executive, Lesley Jones, said that reaching the international Green Key standard was “a fantastic reflection” of Folly Farm’s commitment to being environmentally responsible.
