MRS M. E.GRIFFITHS

HAVERFORDWEST

EDNA Griffiths, who died suddenly last month aged 88, devoted her life to the care of her family and, through her work, to the support of others.

She was a generous homemaker whose caring skills were later extended to the British Red Cross and the former Dyfed Health Authority.

Born in 1925, she grew up in Hook before moving to Haverfordwest where she met her husband Phil Griffiths, a local Post Office engineer. The couple married in 1949 and lived first at Cold Blow and then for 15 years in Saundersfoot, where they were communicants at St Issell’s Church.

Returning to Haverfordwest in the late 1960s, they settled at Priory Park. Edna soon volunteered for the Red Cross, refreshing First Aid qualifications she had originally gained as a teenager, and was employed by the local Health Authority as a member of the occupational therapy team at the former St Thomas and Kensington (St Bride’s) Hospitals, where she was also involved with their League of Friends. She stepped down as the Red Cross Welfare Officer for Pembrokeshire in 1982 to enjoy a happy retirement with her husband.

Her rural upbringing had instilled an early love of nature, and gardening was a lifelong passion along with cooking. She also cherished family life, particularly visits from her grand-daughter and great-nieces.

Edna, whose husband predeceased her in 2010, is survived by her son, daughterin- law and grand-daughter who were the principal mourners among family.

Friends and former colleagues also attended her funeral at St Martin’s Church on May 23rd.

The services at the church and Parc Gwyn Crematorium were led by Rev Father Paul Mackness.

Her niece Debbie Davies delivered a moving appreciation of Edna’s life, recalling her generosity, empathy and the inspiration she gave to her extended family. Helen Griffiths read the words of her grandmother’s favourite hymn ‘Will your anchor hold in the storm of life’, by Priscilla Owens. Her granny, she added, was her family’s anchor.

There were family flowers only, but donations in lieu for St Thomas Surgery may be made to the Practice Manager, St Thomas Surgery, Rifleman Lane, St Thomas Green, Haverfordwest.

Roy Folland and Son carried out the funeral arrangements.
