Mr D A Burton

Haverfordwest

DOUGLAS ALFRED Burton was born in Cardiff, the son of William and Alice Burton.

He started his working life with his dad, and did national service with the Royal Army Medical Corps.

He married Sylvia in 1953 and their 60th anniversary would have been celebrated this month. They were blessed with children Timothy, Philip, Elisabeth, Deborah and Sarah - and their spouses Julie, Carol, Finbarr, Colin and Patrick. Doug had a blessed full family life with 15 grandchildren (plus their partners) and seven great grandchildren and counting.

He was strong, impatient, steadfast, loving, caring, firm, supportive and full of encouragement with a sense of humour, quick wit and mischievousness, brave and determined.

In 1967 the couple moved to Pembroke Dock having bought a men’s outfitters – originally trading as John H Tee. This became the first Douglas Burton shop at 8 Laws Street. Over the next few years their business flourished with shops in Tenby, Haverfordwest and Pembroke town.

When he reached his 50s Doug decided that God was calling him to focus his time and energy into building up people and the Christian community. His strong faith was always at the centre of his life – he believed in truth, honesty, compassion, courage, integrity, hospitality, moral upstanding, appreciating and serving others.

He was one of the founders of the Christian fellowship known as the Haven Evangelical Church – starting with a children’s Sunday school in the local park in Pembroke Dock and eventually moved to the Old Brewery in Pembroke which still functions as the Haven Church and Christian Centre.

A keen member of the Gideons and a supporter of TEAR fund and other Christian organisations, he was closely involved with Operation Mobilisation, its ships that travel the world and other projects. In the late ‘90s the couple moved back to Cardiff where he became the Pastor of Rumney Gospel Chapel – he then returned to Pembrokeshire in the last few years and eventually settled at De Clare Court, Haverfordwest where he was nursed by family and carers in the last few months.

The funeral took place on June 20 at Monkton Priory Church and was led by Rev Paul Nash who was also a close friend.

The funeral directors were John Roberts and Son, Pembroke Dock, to whom donations for the Paul Sartori Foundation can be made in memory of Douglas.
