Mrs S M Allen

Hook

MRS Sarah Maureen Allen (nee Lloyd) of Newtown Road, Hook, Haverfordwest whose health had not been good for some time, died suddenly and unexpectedly at Withybush Hospital on March 20.

Maureen, a native of Hook, was the daughter of Beatrice Lloyd. She was the cherished wife of Hugh Allen, the devoted and proud mother of Joy (Clark), loving grandmother to Ieuan, Rowan and Sophia and mother-in-law to Simon. Her childhood years were spent in Pill Road, Hook where she learned to enjoy the abundant world of nature in all of its riches around her.

Her education was in Hook CP School and then Taskers School for Girls in Haverfordwest.

Maureen trained for an ultimately spent all of her working life in the Post Office first in Fishguard and then in Quay Street, Haverfordwest, initially on the counter and thereafter in the administration and management office.

Maureen’s assiduous commitment to work was very soon recognised and appreciated by her senior management, whilst the local staff and those engaged as sub post-masters in the Pembrokeshire area came to value her kind help, assistance and guidance.

In the last couple of years the birth of Joy and Simon’s three children Ieuan, Rowan and Sophia filled Maureen with delight, happiness and pride. The opportunities of visiting and baby-sitting even at a distance, were grabbed and valued beyond measure. Maureen saw and valued these times as a great privilege to lovingly shape, even in a small way, the infant lives of her grandchildren.

Throughout Maureen’s life her Christian faith and its outworking at St Jerome’s Church, Llangwm, to which she was committed came very high on her list of priorities, Baptism, Sunday School, Confirmation, Mother’s Union, Church Treasurer, to which must be added her constant encouragement and guidance of all within her family.

Maureen’s funeral service was held at St Jerome’s Church, Llangwm , officiated by the Revd Victoria K Jones followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn. The lesson was read by the Revd Harri Williams, Vicar of Milford Haven and the commendation was lead by the Revd Graham Lloyd (Maureen’s brother). The bearers were Andrew and Stewart Lloyd (Maureen’s nephews); Paul Davies (cousin) and Michael Thornberry (family friend).

Donations in lieu of flowers are for the benefit of Cancer Research UK c/o Mrs Wendy Howells of 6 Furzy Crest, Newtown Road, Hook, Haverfordwest. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Glyn Thomas and son, of Freystrop.

Mr D G J Jones

Haverfordwest

MR David Gwynfor James Jones of Cinnamon Grove, Old Hakin Road, Haverfordwest unexpectedly passed away at his home on April 2 at the age of 85 years.

Gwyn as he liked to be called, was the eldest son of the late Evan and Martha Elizabeth Jones and had lived at Cinnamon Grove, except for the time that he spent in the Royal Navy, for some seventy six years.

He was educated at Bolton Hill Primary School, Milford Central School and Haverfordwest Grammar School.

When he left school he joined the staff of the Motor Vehicle Licensing Department of the old Pembrokeshire County Council. Following his service in the Royal Navy as a Petty Officer Postal Writer he rejoined the department before transferring to the accounts section of the County Architects Department of the Dyfed County Council where he remained until his retirement in 1993.

Gwyn was a very keen sportsman, he had played rugby for Haverfordwest Grammar School, Neyland All Blacks and had turned out on many occasions as a guest player for the Pembrokeshire Police. He had boxed as an amateur for the Merlins Bridge Amateur Boxing Club on many occasions as well as fighting many bouts as an amateur whilst serving with the Royal Navy.

On leaving the Navy, Gwyn joined the Territorial Army, accepted a commission and eventually reached the rank of Captain. On his retirement from the TA he served with the Pembrokeshire Army Cadet Force helping to run the Milford and Fishguard detachments. Many young men and women will be grateful to Gwyn for the interest that he took in their welfare.

His beloved wife Iris Irene whom he had married in 1949 sadly predeceased him just eight weeks before they were due to celebrate their Golden Wedding Anniversary. Following the death of his wife, Gwyn was lovingly cared for by his two daughters Sandra and Sonia. He gratefully appreciated the love and attention that they showered upon him.

The funeral and commemorative service for Gwyn’s life was held on April 11. The coffin draped in the white ensign and preceded by the standard of the Haverfordwest Branch of the Royal Naval Association was borne into the Tiers Cross United Reform Church, where Gwyn had been a member for 64 years by Messrs David and Gareth Hawkins (grandchildren,) Russell and Matthew Hawkins. A packed church which overflowed into the porch and the adjoining schoolroom heard the officiating ministers Revd Martyn Spain and the Revd Martyn Evans pay tribute to Gwyn as a loving caring husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and brother, as a faithful servant of the church and as a member of the community at large. Gwyn was a regular worshipper at the church and had served for many years as administrator of the Tiers Cross Cemetery, a role that he had only just recently passed on. In the 1950’s he had been involved with the Merlin Bridge Welfare Association, which had been formed on the demise of the old Merlin Bridge Welcome Home Committee, and had played a leading role in the establishment of the Merlin Bridge Memorial playing field and associated children’s play area. For twenty plus years he was secretary of the Haverfordwest Branch of the Royal Navy Association. He was an Honorary Member of the Landing Craft Association and for twenty years laid on, Armistices Sunday, on behalf of the association,a wreath at the Landing Craft Memorial at Milford Haven. In association with American Servicemen, based at Brawdy, he had initiated the erection of the Memorial Cairn at Denant to American airmen killed when a Liberator returning from a bombing mission crashed at West Denant.

Though Gwyn had travelled abroad he never really understood why people had to seek holidays abroad or in other parts of the country when they had everything on their doorstep in Pembrokeshire.

He was never happier than when he had his family around him.

Gwyn was a great conversationalist, his knowledge of Pembrokeshire families and of events in Pembrokeshire was legendary, and he enjoyed talking about those events and the families of his native to Pembrokeshire to anyone who was prepared to listen. The hymns ‘The Lord’s my shepherd ‘and ‘How great thou art’ were sung by the congregation and Eirwyn Phillips a friend of Gwyn sang in Welsh his favourite hymn ‘Have you heard the voice of Jesus’. The organist was Kathleen Cole a valued friend of Gwyn and the family. Gwyn was truly a great character and a ‘True son of Pembrokeshire’. He will be sadly missed by his family and the many friends that he had made worldwide.

The chief mourners at the funeral were Sandra and Barrie Hawkins (daughter and son-in-law); Sonia and Paul Quinn (daughter and partner); David and Kate Hawkins (grandson and wife); Gareth Hawkins (grandson); Alun and Joan Jones (brother and sister-inlaw); Nichola Lapraik, Petra Humphrey, Suzanne, Kirsty, Cynthia, Adam Hayley, Paul and Lyndsey, Anne and Anthony (nephews and nieces); Jean Howells, Danny and Lesley Baize; Sidney Vincent along with numerous cousins and close friends.

Unable to attend were Gillian, Mathew and Tristan Eaton – USA; Christopher, Lorraine Baglee, Graham and Nichola Baglee-Portsmouth; John and Innes Lapraik Cambridge (nieces and nephews) and very close friends Terry and Winston Roswell – Alabama and Ricky Jensen – Alaska and his two heart- broken great granddaughters (His Stars) Saskia and Sienna Hawkins.

Donations in his memory can be made to Paul Sartori Foundation c/o Treasurer, 21, Haven Road Haverfordwest and should be marked memory of Gwynfor Jones.

Roy Folland and Son of Haverfordwest carried out the arrangements.
