Mr D Mason

Crundale

THE funeral of Derrick Mason took place on Friday June 12 with a service at Crundale United Reformed Church, followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn Narberth.

The Rev. Martin Spain officiated and told of how Derrick met Olwyn his wife of 65 years, and also about his young life at Wolfsdale and working life at Sunnyhill Farm.

The bearers were grandsons Neil, Ben, David and Aaron.

At the church Derricks eldest daughter Jenny read a tribute to her dad from her and her brother Alan and sisters Julie and Lynette. Then at the crematorium granddaughter Kate read a tribute from his grandchildren.

All who attended were invited to join the family at Owls Hoot Crundale for refreshments.

In April this year Derrick celebrated his 90th birthday, and was joined by over 100 guests of family, friends and neighbours, including his 14 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

Having reached the grand old age of 90, Derrick said he had everything he needed so instead of presents asked that donations be made to the Thorn Mason Trust which was set up by his son Mike when he was diagnosed with a brain tumour, the same type of tumour that his sister Cheryl had.

Sadly both lost their battle with cancer, Cheryl 26 years ago aged 26 and Mike five years ago just before his 56th birthday.

The trust received £300 from Derrick’s birthday and donations in lieu of flowers are still being received by Mrs Debbie Mason, Owls Hoot, Crundale There were family flowers only with donations in lieu to the Thorne Mason Trust.

He spent many happy and contented years as a local resident.

Windsor took great interest in the village and could always be relied upon for his support.

He was stimulating company with a wicked and mischievous sense of humour.

His presence filled the room.

He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

This was reflected by the many family, friends and neighbours who attended the funeral service at St Mary’s Church, Angle on June 23. It was officiated by Rev J Howells, Canon R J Rees and Mrs S Denman. The organist was Mrs Norma Lewis.

A very moving poem was read, by his daughter Lucia, and the eulogy was given by Mr J Hammond.
