Mr D James

Pennar

DELYS James (nee Preece), who died at South Pembs Hospital on October 11, was born on January 8 1932, in Birmingham where her parents had moved when her father had joined the police force following the closure of the Royal Dockyard Pembroke.

The family’s roots were in Pembroke and Delys often made visits back to her grandmother’s home in Golden Hill, in Pembroke with her brothers, sister and parents.

Delys spent much of the war at her grandmother’s home in Golden Hill, and during this time she developed her love of Pembrokeshire.

After the war Delys trained as a teacher in Birmingham, but spent much of her free time in Pembroke, getting involved with the activities of the Young Farmers Club and The Red Cross. She met her husband to be, Bryan James, outside Haggars cinema and romance blossomed after several country walks and bike rides together with but a packet of ‘Spangles’ for refreshment.

After marrying in 1955, they lived for a short while in Orange Gardens, Pembroke and in St Mary’s Vicarage on Westgate Hill, Pembroke.

In 1957 they bought a house in Cross Park, Pennar, where they brought up their children Adrian, Ralph, Linzi and Daryl. Cross Park would be a home for life, full of many happy memories.

Delys taught at Pennar Junior School for many years and was a dedicated teacher, who always enjoyed giving children the opportunity to have new experiences.

She firmly believed in the importance of giving youngsters as much opportunity as possible to extend their horizons and fulfil their potential.

Many of her former pupils still remember her with fondness and when they said ‘hello’ to her around town she inevitably remember their name even if she hadn’t seen them since they left primary school.

Apart from caring for her family, Delys also had a keen interest in anything to do with the natural world.

She had a particular good knowledge of wild flowers and at every opportunity the family would be ‘out and about’ exploring the countryside and beaches of Pembrokeshire.

She became involved with the work of the West Wales Wildlife Trust, she and Bryan volunteered at Upton Castle Gardens and at the WRVS tea stand at South Pembs Hospital.

She also was an avid and skilful patchwork quilt maker.

Delys injected a sense of fun into all the family get togethers and avoided the mundane ‘like the plague’.

Left with countless happy memories are her children Adrian, Ralph, Linzi and Daryl, their families and the large extended family, including their neighbours and friends in Cross Park.

As Delys frequently said after a day’s outing on the cost or in the countryside ‘All good things come to an end’.

There were only close family flowers at the funeral, that took place at Parc Gwyn on October 23, but donations in memory of Delys, if so desired, can be made to Stackpole Walled Garden (MENCAP) c/o E C Thomas and Son, Funeral Director, Zoar Chapel Funeral Home, Llanteg, Narberth SA67 8QH.
