THE death occurred at Fairfield Nursing Home, Johnston on February 5 of Mr Robert Alexander Kennedy.

He was 90.

During the early years of living in Pembrokeshire Robert met and married Helen, an art teacher. They enjoyed many happy years together before her untimely death.

Originally from Brighton, Robert was widely known and a respected figure within the local community and he became the first county museum curator for Pembrokeshire, which was opened in 1967. Later on Penrhos Cottage and Scolton Manor Museum were worthy additions for Pembrokeshire, which Robert and his staff worked hard to run.

His deep love and interest in archaeology was shown in his stalwart and steadfast support of Dyfed Archaeological Trust right from its conception.

His interests were numerous including a passion for sailing and he again became a founder member of West Wales Maritime Heritage Society, which has gone from strength to strength.

He was also strongly involved with the late Gerald Oliver in founding Haverfordwest Civic Society and supported the society tirelessly until quite recently.

His hobbies were many from art and music to walking his dogs and from architecture to wildlife.

Robert was a remarkable man and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

The family left to mourn are Ann (wife); Vanessa and Lindsey (daughters); Catherine, Tom and Firle (grandchildren); Stuart and Ursula (brother and sister-in-law); Robert, Edward and Melissa (nephews and niece); Louise (sister-in-law); Helen and Stephen (niece and nephew).

The funeral was held at Parc Gwyn Crematorium, Narberth on February 18.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Roy Folland and Sons, funeral directors of Haverfordwest.

 

Mrs P Blake

New Hampshire USA

Formerly of Pembroke Dock

MRS Pamela Blake (nee Mathias) passed away peacefully at her home in New Hampshire, USA on February 15.

Previously she lived in Bush Street, Pembroke Dock.

She was the daughter of the late Albert and Martha Mathias, wife of Brian, mother of Julie, Ian and Jane and their families, sister of Diana and John.

 

Mr B Sherlock

Llanreath

MR Brian Sherlock of St Patricks Hill, Llanreath, Pembroke Dock passed away on February 19 at Glangwili Hospital, Carmarthen.

He was 87.

As a native of Pembrokeshire, he was a sales representative in the early years and the secretary of Hereford Community Health Council for 20 years (an organisation that represented the interests of the public in matters re NHS services).

He was an avid rugby fan supporting the Welsh team and also local teams.

His interests included his family, travelling to many parts of the world, he enjoyed reading, writing his own poetry, and world affairs.

The family left to mourn are his sons Edward and Huw Sherlock, daughter Margaret Sherlock, grandchildren Alex, Ben, Ruth and Fin.

The service was held at Parc Gwyn Crematorium on March 1.

It was officiated by Mike Ashbridge and the bearers were members of the family.

Mr G A Lewis

Letterston

MR Gareth Andrew Lewis, previously known as Ulrich, died suddenly at home in Letterston on February 10.

He was 40 years old.

Born in Haverfordwest in 1976, Gareth attended Wolfscastle County Primary and Fishguard High Schools before qualifying as a builder through Pembrokeshire College.

He went on to work for Jewson’s in Aberystwyth, St Dogmaels and Goodwick, and later for Fishguard Building Supplies.

Gareth married Louisa in 1998, two daughters were to follow, Catherine and Megan.

Gareth was well known for his bright personality and was always smiling and ready with a joke.

He suffered great pain and disability following a workrelated accident 12 years ago.

He never complained and always put the needs of others before his own.

Following his accident, Gareth gained a 2.1 BSc in Architecture. He was passionate about the arts and crafts and adapted his skills to wood turning, carpentry and worked for some time as a tattoo artist, owning studios in both Milford Haven and Goodwick.

He touched the lives of many, and this was evident by the large gathering at Parc Gwyn Crematorium on February 22. The service was led by Rev Geoffrey Eynon. The bearers were Eifion Bateman, Geraint Lewis, Matthew Lewis, Dewi Morgans (cousins), Jamie Dougan and Dai Webb (close friends).

Jamie Dougan also read a beautiful and moving eulogy during the service.

The family left to mourn are Catherine, Megan and Louisa, Eurig and Margaret (parents); Judith and Mike (sister and brother-in-law); Rhodri and Anna (brother and sisterin- law); Leah and Georgia (nieces), and extended family and friends too numerous to mention.

Donations in lieu of flowers on behalf of the British Heart Foundation were accepted by Mr Geraint Lewis.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Paul Jenkins and Sons of Fishguard.

 

Mr P Smith

Neyland

PAUL (Miffy) Smith passed away at Withybush Hospital on February 28. He was 56.

Throughout his life he had worked as a barman, and on various civil construction sites and as a painter and decorator.

He was well known in Neyland for his sporting activities.

He played football and trained young lads and also played darts, pool, snooker and golf.

The family left to mourn Doreen and Dave (parents); Mike and Janet, Jef and Janet (brother and sister-inlaw); Caroline and Donald, Kim and Kevin (sisters and brothers-in-law); Andrea and Gareth, Helen and husband; Stephine, Samantha, Domonic and David (cousins); Melville, Haden and their family (aunt and uncle).

The funeral service took place on March 7 at Parc Gwyn and it was officiated by Huw George.

The bearers were Mike Evans, David Assall, Domonic Hooper, Nigel Beavis, Jamie Charlton and Paul Davies.

There were family flowers only with donations in lieu to Neyland Pirates.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Tom Newing and Sons Ltd, of Milford Haven

 

Mr A F Allen

Haverfordwest

MR Albert Frederick Allen passed away at Glangwilli Hospital, Carmarthen on February 1st.

He was 78.

Albert was the eldest of three children of Mary and Frederick Allen and leaves sister Julia Oughton and brother Ron.

He was brought up in Milford Haven and went to North Road School and then Milford Grammar School.

On leaving school he started work at Olivers Shoes before doing two years National Service in the R.A.F, serving in Gloucester. When he returned, he resumed his sales career and became a local furniture store manager.

Later he and his wife opened various craft and fashion shops and then became the proprietors of a successful restaurant and cafe at the Riverside, Haverfordwest.

Albert was a deacon at Tabernacle Church, Haverfordwest where he was a faithful member.

He enjoyed short mat bowls and played regularly with the church team all over the country.

He was also a keen dancer from his youth to his later years. He developed dementia over the latter years and spent his last year in Brooklands Care Home in Saundersfoot, where the carers were very kind to him.

Albert leaves to mourn his daughter Serena; sister and brother-in-law Julia and Brian Oughton; brother and sister-in-law Ron and Jean Allen; sister-in-law Dorothy Banner; brother-in-law Gareth Morgan and wife Avril Morgan, plus numerous cousins, nephews and nieces.

The funeral service was held at the Tabernacle Church in Haverfordwest, and was officiated by the two resident ministers Rev Chris Gillam and Rev Steve Woods, where a large number of friends and relatives paid tribute to his life.

The service was followed by cremation at Park Gwyn Crematorium in Narberth.

The bearers were Noel Evans, Cliff James, Roger Price and Peter Bannister.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Glyn Thomas of Freystrop.

 

Mr D A Smith

Monkton

THE funeral took place on Monday February 29 of Mr Derek Anthony Smith of Monkton, Pembroke, who died peacefully at Withybush Hospital on February 19.

A large gathering of family and friends attended the funeral at Monkton Priory Church, where the service was officiated by Rev Paul Nash, followed by burial at Monkton Cemetery.

The eulogy was read by Christine Butland (daughter), and a poem read by Mark Butland (son-in-law).

Derek was born in Hundleton and lived there until marrying Eleanor in 1965 and they lived the rest of their married life in Monkton.

They recently celebrated their golden wedding.

The bearers were Philip Smith (son); Mark Butland (son-in-law); Duncan Brown (son-in-law); Shaun Brown (grandson); Brian Smith (brother); Bob Guymer (friend).

The principal mourners and family left to mourn are Eleanor Smith (wife); Lynne and Duncan Brown (daughter and son-in-law); Christine and Mark Butland (daughter and son-in-law); Philip and Cathy Smith (son and daughter-in-law); Shaun and Amy (grandson and fiancé); Lauren,Phoebe, Lois and Libby (granddaughters); Brian and Rose Smith (brother and sister-in-law); Irene Robertson (sister-in-law); Mrs Winnie Leckie (aunty); Kathryn Paddick, Alyson and Jamie Griffiths, Andrew and Kate Robertson, Martin and Freya, Michelle and Marc (nieces and nephews); Sophie, Mathew, Ruth, Luke, Adam, Thomas and Ewan (great nephews and nieces); David and Maureen (cousins).

There were flowers from family and friends and donations to the Stroke Association.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Neil Roberts, 51 Bush Street, Pembroke Dock.
