Mr C Palmer

Formerly of Pembroke Dock

COLIN Palmer died peacefully at his home in Porthmadog on March 12 and, although he had lived in North Wales all his working life, in recent years there was an irresistible urge to return to his Pembroke Dock roots which he did catching up with some of his old school contemporaries.

He was born in 1931 and had an idyllic pre-war boyhood during which he was involved in some rather exciting but dangerous escapades not least of which was a very daring swim across the Cleddau to Neyland.

He was first educated at the Coronation School in Pembroke Dock where his grandfather was the deputy head, then at the Grammar School and then onto Swansea College of Art for his degree.

As a young man he was athletic, played rugby, tennis, squash and fenced but primarily he was an artist, a talent also evident in his mother and grandmother.

After a brief spell teaching at the Bishop Gore school, he was offered a post in a new school being built in Harlech.

One look at the surrounding mountains and he knew he had to stay and try to interpret on canvas his feelings for the landscape, for the rocks and slate he viewed on a daily basis. He did this successfully for over 60 years exhibiting widely.

To this day, his ex-students speak of their Art classes with him as being different and great fun. His quirky style has stayed in their memories as they still speak of him with great affection.

In between his busy family and teaching life, he spent a lot of time sailing, golfing and fishing as well as encouraging others to take up their paint brushes.

Colin lived life to the full up until the last few weeks – he was a lovely, lively, interesting character with a wicked sense of humour and a fund of stories to tell.

His star will shine brightly forever.
