MRS Joan Mary Brown (nee Hebden) was born in the seaside town of Scarborough in Yorkshire. She was the daughter of Lilly and Jack Hebdon and sister to Margaret and Sheila.

Joan’s life changed when Fred Brown was in Scarborough, completing his National Service in the army.

He was walking along the pavement when he saw a bus passing. On the bus was the most beautiful lady he had ever seen. Fred spent days looking for this lady. One day, he went into a newsagent and was Joan serving behind the counter. He soon asked her out and he decided he wanted to get married too. The couple were engaged. and then married quite shortly afterwards in St Columbus Church in 1959.

When Fred finished his National Service in the army, Joan and Fred moved to Pembroke Dock. Linda was born. The couple decided to move back to Scarborough because of work and Stephen was born. But baby Stephen passed away at five days old and they were devastated.

Amanda (Mandy) was born in Scarborough in the same hospital as Stephen.

Fred was always in work in Scarborough, but they decided to move back to Pembroke Dock. Phillip and then Kevin were born in Pembroke Dock and they never moved away again.

Fred was always busy working and Joan would work around looking after the family and her mam, they always came first. As the children grew older Joan went out to work and worked at Pennar Park for many years. She also worked at a cigarette machine company in Pembroke Dock and later Jimmy Ley’s care home.

Joan and Fred would bring the children on family holidays most years. When the children had children of their own, Joan and Fred would go abroad, including visits to Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and other countries.
