Mr J A Mason

Cilgerran

THE funeral took place at St David’s Cathedral on May 18 of John Arthur Mason (Jason), affectionately known as Jason who was born on May 26 1946 and brought up in Prendergast in Haverfordwest.

He was one of six children including a twin brother Richard who sadly pre-deceased him a few years ago as well as his two sisters.

Jason met his beloved Eluned Rose known to all as Lynne, from Treiago Farm of St Davids. They married on September 30 1978 in St Davids Cathedral and spent 37 happy years together. Following their marriage, they originally lived in Treiago Farm, St Davids with ‘Mam Treiago” but later they all moved to Avalon overlooking the castle in Cilgerran, which they all loved and shared for many years.

Jason was a chef all his life commencing as a baker at Osborne and Perkins Bakery in Haverfordwest, later as a chef at Castell Malgwyn, then The Gate House in Tenby, The Nest Bistro in Little Haven and the Mariners in Haverfordwest. In his latter working years he worked at Fishguard Bay Hotel, a job which he truly loved. After retirement he would often visit the Fishguard Bay. Jason was always keen to help so would be found assisting in the food preparation whilst catching up with his old colleagues in the Fishguard Bay kitchens where he would be gently asked to leave the kitchens as he was not on the payroll anymore! His colleagues remember him as a nice, quiet man who never spoke a cross word to anyone.

Jason’s hobbies included sketching for his much loved nephews and nieces and grand nephews and grand nieces whom he was very fond of. These drawings would be personalised for each person with their particular interest and were posted on their birthdays or Christmas. He always signed these from Jason and his beloved Lynne who predeceased him by eighteen months and whose loss he never really recovered from.

Jason and Lynne had no children of their own but were much loved by all their many nephews and nieces and grand nephews and nieces, many of whom had travelled far to pay their final respects to ‘Uncle Jase’.

He leaves to mourn brothers David and Alan and their wives; Mabs, Eirys, Joy, Tony and Mel (sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law and their partners) and his many loving nephews and nieces and great nephews and nieces.

The family are very grateful to his supportive neighbours in Cilgerran who looked out for him after the loss of his beloved Lynne. The service was officiated by Canon Dorrien Davies and funeral arrangements conducted by Bernard Mathias and daughter.
