Miss M J Davies

St Davids

MISS Margaret Janet Davies of New Street, St Davids.

passed away peacefully on April 7, at her home.

Being the second daughter of James and Elizabeth Davies, ‘Dolwerdd’, St Davids, Janet was born and brought up in St Davids with her three sisters Rachel, Mary and Grace, attending the local schools before training to be a teacher of domestic science at the College of Domestic Arts, Cardiff.

Her first teaching post was in Melksham, Wiltshire.

In 1950, Janet returned to Pembrokeshire, taking up a teaching post at Taskers School for Girls. From there, in 1962, she moved to Milford Haven Central School before returning to Ysgol Dewi Sant until her retirement. In her testimonials over these times, she was commended for her sincerity, extraordinary ability and gift to inspire in others the desire to attain high standards. She had a well-deserved reputation for excellent work, of being extremely capable, efficient and conscientious.

Janet’s faith was very important to her throughout her life. In 1962 she succeeded her late father as Treasurer of Seion Baptist Chapel.

She later transferred her membership to Middle Mill.

She also took on the trusteeship of Tretio Chapel, for which she was Treasurer for over fifty years and later became a Trustee of the charity, Crossroads.

Janet was more than just a classroom specialist: her love of cookery, needlework, arts and crafts, design and technology saw her excel in extramural activities. She attended many courses and tours including France and Italy, perfecting her craft and passing on her skills outside the classroom with cookery demonstrations, evening classes, working with the young farmers’ clubs, women’s institutes and judging at various shows. She was also renowned for preparing and organising teas for upwards of 200 people as well as designing and making costumes for numerous dramatic and operatic performances.

Janet’s life was full; she freely gave of her time and expertise in order for others to learn and enjoy those crafts and she was renowned for her entertaining to perfection for her family and friends.

On October 15 2016 Janet celebrated her 90th birthday in St Davids with all her family around her – it was a very precious day with family members relating stories with great humour, enabling Janet to hear and see for herself how much she was valued and loved. Janet faced her subsequent illness with her customary courage and dignity and appreciation, passing away peacefully at home, as was her wish, with family by her side. She will be very much missed by all those close to her.

A service of remembrance was held at the Chapel of Rest in St Davids, followed by her internment alongside other family members at Tretio.

Left to mourn are her sister Grace, cousins, nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews, along with a number of extended families and friends.
