Hakin

MR ALAN (Alec) Bell of John Lewis Street, Hakin, Milford Haven passed away peacefully at his home on May 24, at the grand age of 90.

Alec was born in 1926 at Annfield Plain, Co Durham to Ethel and Ernest Bell. He was the eldest of three sons.

After leaving school Alec began a ‘Fitting and Turning’ apprenticeship at the local Northern Bus Company Garage.

He then joined the RAF and after initial training in Lincolnshire, he was posted to The Marine Craft section at RAF Calshot, where the forces fleet of launches serviced and maintained the Flying Boat Squadrons. Alec was then posted to Pembroke Dock and then onto Fishguard, where the launches would be used to recover missiles fired from the Experimental Rocket Range at Aberporth.

During this time Alec met Joyce Morris of Lower Town, Fishguard. They were married in1954. Alec was then posted onto active service in ‘The Malayan Emergency’.

Upon completing ten years service with the RAF, Alec began working for British Rail in Neath as a diesel fitter. In 1960 he secured employment as a process operator at the newly built Esso Oil Refinery in Milford Haven. Alec worked there until its closure in the 1980’s.

He was predeceased by Joyce in July 2009, after 56 years of marriage. Sadly from then on Alec’s health declined.

The funeral took place on June 2 at Parc Gwyn, officiated by Rev Andy Bookless.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Tom Newing and Sons Ltd, of Milford Haven.

 

Mrs L Goatley

Haverfordwest

MRS LINDA Goatley passed away at her home in Furzy Park, Haverfordwest on May 25 at the age of 51.

She was born in Cardiff in 1965 and Linda was brought up in the Tremorfa area of Cardiff, the only child of Iris and the late Cliff Murphy. Linda attended Heathfield House Catholic School for Girls in Cardiff where she excelled at athletics.

Her great love was music, as well as dancing, walking, holidays and fashion.

She was always kind and willing to help others. She was enthusiastic and conscientious in her working life.

She worked for Boots, Woolworths, Allders, David Morgan, and she was an at home carer for the Alzheimer’s Society (all in Cardiff).

She then became the school crossing patrol on Barn Street for Barn Street VC School and on Milford Road for Mary Immaculate Catholic School between 1999 and 2014. She was well liked and respected in her position, always taking care of and ensuring the school children were safe.

Linda married Martyn in Cardiff in 1996 and they moved to Haverfordwest to make their home there.

She will be fondly remembered and very sadly missed by those that knew her. Her smile, kindness, enthusiasm and sense of humour will never be forgotten.

The family left to mourn are Martyn (husband) and Iris (mother).

The funeral was held at Parc Gwyn on June 13. The service was officiated by Rev Huw George.

Mr S H A James

Pembroke

STEPHEN Henry Allen James (Steve) originally from Lower Lamphey Park and latterly St Daniels Drive, Pembroke passed away on May 6 aged 81, after bravely battling a short illness.

Steve was born in 1935 to Harry and Roma and was an only child.

He farmed at Lower Lamphey Park until his retirement at age 56. Steve married Betty in 1957 and they had three children. He was also a grandfather to seven and great grandfather to two. He was dearly loved and leaves happy memories.

Steve led a busy, active life and was well known in the local community as was evidenced by the large number of mourners at his funeral.

He had been a member of St Michaels amateur dramatic society producing and per-forming in numerous plays and pantomimes. As a young man he was a member of South Pembs Young Farmers and later a leader of the Martletwy club.

In his teenage years he joined South Pembrokeshire Hunt and eventually became Chairman.

He loved the countryside and was a keen fisherman, enjoying many happy hours sea or river fishing. He spent his retirement gardening, following country sports, commentating at Pembroke Show as a member of Pembroke Farmers club, fishing and bowling. In the last few years he was an active member of Pembroke Dock Bowling Club with his wife Betty.

Steve will be missed by a great many people. A kind, gentle man he will leave a huge gap in family life.

The family left to mourn are Betty James (wife); Janet, Stephen and Helen (children); Helen, Mathew, Jenna, Sam, Katy, Owen and Morgan (grandchildren), Eloise and Jack (great grandchildren).

The family are grateful to the staff Withybush Ward 10, Paul Sartori, the Argyle Care team, Argyle surgery, Sharon Jones (Palliative care nurse) and Neil Roberts who carried out the funeral arrangements.

The service was held at Parc Gwyn on May 18.

 

Mrs B M Harries

Crundale

MRS Bronwen Mary Harries passed away at her home on March 27 aged 81 years.

Mary was born at the Boot and Shoe Public House in Crundale to Frances and Robbie Adams. Mary had two younger sisters. Margaret who predeceased her in 2000 and Enid the youngest who she looked after until she became ill.

After leaving school she worked in the family business and after her parents retired she became the landlady of the pub. When she retired in 1979 Mary moved to Highclere, Crundale to look after her parents and sister.

She was a very house proud person and loved working in the garden.

Mary was a faithful member of Crundale, United Reform Chapel and was also a member of Haverfordwest Ladies Choir.

Due to poor health in the last few years Mary could not go out as much as she liked but loved to see her many friends and family who called at Highclere for a cup of tea and a chat.

The principal mourners were Anne and John (daughter and son-in-law); David and Kathryn (son and daughter- in-law); Kate and Darren (granddaughter and partner); Robert (grandson); Sophie (granddaughter); Angela and Amelia (late partner Hugh’s daughter and granddaughter) and Mauvereen and Dilys (cousins).

The funeral at Crundale Chapel was officiated by Rev Martin Spain and was followed by interment at Bethlehem Baptist Chapel. The organist was Mrs Sian Lewis.

The bearers were Andrew Cruwys, David, Richard and Peter Roach.

Donations in lieu of flowers to Paul Sartori Foundation, Winch Lane, Haverfordwest.

Mr C Bowen

Whitland

MR CLIFTON Bowen of Gwyn Villa, Whitland passed away on April 15 after an illness courageously borne.

He was 72 year old. He spent most for his working life at the Texaco Refinery at Pembroke where he had many good friends. Rugby was his main passion and he played and refereed for many years being a lifelong Whitland RFC supporter. He also loved his golf and usually played at Haverfordwest Golf Club twice a week and here again he had many friends.

The service was held at Parc Gwyn on April 28. The bearers were Tony Bowen, Brian Harries, Peter Baker, and Freddie Lewis. The service was officiated by Rev Guto Llewellyn and the organist was Menna Lewis of Tenby. Mr John Charnock a work colleague of Clifton’s gave the eulogy.

The family left to mourn are Anne (wife); Emma and Chris (daughter and son-in-law); Kate and Marc (daughter and partner); Thomas, James, Abigail and Lucille (grandchildren); Glenmarie and Beryl (sisters), brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Donations for Heart Foundation Wales and Cancer Research Wales c/o W J K Davies, Blaenwern, Clunderwen, who also carried out the funeral arrangements Mr T H James Johnston MR TREVOR Hugh James of Cranham Park, Johnston passed away at Withybush Hospital on May 19 at the age of 66.

He was born in Gorseinon and moved to Haverfordwest at the age of three and then to Johnston in 1979.

He worked for Royal Mail for 48 years, all his working life and retired in 2016.

He served in the TA Postal Couriers through Royal Mail.

His interests included gardening, fishing, music, spending time with family and friends. He also did some voluntary driving for the council country cars.

The family left to mourn are Mrs Helen James (wife of 37 years); Jennifer and Ben (daughter and partner); Bethany (granddaughter); Steven and Stacey (son and partner); Susan and Michael (sister and husband), plus nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles, numerous friends and colleagues.

The funeral was held at St Peters Church, Johnston on May 31 followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn. It was officiated by Rev Marcus Zipperlen and Rev Steven Bessant.

The bearers were Steven James (son); Colin Evans, John Bonwick and Allen Thomas (friends).

Miss E J Pulford

Milford Haven

MISS Elizabeth Joyce Pulford of St Peter’s Road, Milford Haven passed away at Bush Care Home, Pembroke on May 4.

She was 90.

Joyce was the elder daughter of Jack Pulford and his wife Vera (previously Maddick).

She had a younger sister Beryl (all deceased).

During her working life she worked in Milford’s main post office in counter services, previously the post office telegram service from the age of 16. She worked there for 43 years before retirement.

During her life she had loved dancing and had enjoyed many happy times at the Masonic Hall, Caledonian Dances and old time dancing.

She enjoyed visiting family and friends for a cup of tea.

She was an expert knitter and seamstress and enjoyed her garden.

The mourners were cousins Pamela, Jon and Jamie Gannon, Gillian and Stephanie Clarke, Harriet White, Margaret Adams, Barry Kingston, Angie and Pat Pulford, Vaughan Pulford, Angela and Peter Kidd, Rhian Kingston and Alex; Ruth Robson and Judith, Mandy Hewer, Natalie Marshausay, Angela Murphy (friends).

The funeral took place at Hamilton Court Funeral Home on May 19 followed by interment at Milford Cemetery.

It was officiated by Margaret Price.
