Neyland

The death occurred on May 13th at Rickeston Mill Nursing Home of James Little, of The Promenade, Neyland. He was 81.

Originally from Annalong, County Down, Ireland, James was an apprentice at Harland and Wolfs shipyard, Belfast, becoming a draughtsman.

In 1950 he went to sea as a marine engineer for six years. He married Betty in 1957 and returned to shore as an engineer in a paper mill in Manchester.

They came to Pembrokeshire in 1960 for James to work at Esso Oil refinery, moving to Gulf in 1967, where he worked as a maintenance superintendent.

After retirement from Gulf he advised various companies involved in the oil industry. He also worked as an engineer on oil tankers from the haven.

James’ Christian faith was very important to him. He was the superintendent of the Sunday school and elder at Rehoboth Presbyterian Church in Hakin. He would also run Christian Endeavour youth groups in Neyland and Hakin. For several years he was a member of Milford Haven Christian Fellowship. James was the treasurer of Hubberston Parish Church before moving to worship in Llanstadwell Church.

James and Betty led bible study and prayer groups in their home, visiting Fflad-y-Brenin retreat on many occasions. For 32 years he was a member of Neyland town council.

James loved the sea and enjoyed taking people for trips in his dinghy on the river Cleddau.

He was a volunteer helper at HOPE centre for many years. He enjoyed gardening and had great pleasure in being with his grandchildren. Over the last three years he enjoyed the support, companionship and fun of the Milford Haven Stroke Club.

Family left to mourn and principal mourners are Betty Little (wife); Christopher Little (son); Lizzie and Peter Smith (daughter and son-in-law); John Little (brother); Lois, Naomi and Sam Smith (grandchildren); John Fisher (cousin); Eileen Hartt (cousin); Kathryn Teo (ward).

There was a large congregation at the service held at St Clement’s Church Neyland, which was officiated by Rev Alan Chadwick, with prayers by Rev Bill Lewis.

The bearers were John Little, John Fisher, Dick Gibson, Martin Davies, Alan Gillmore and Jeff Lewis.

There were family flowers only with donations for The Stroke Association (Pembrokeshire); Age Concern (Pembrokeshire) and The Gideons International (Pembroke-shire) to Lizzie Smith, Christchurch Vicarage, Burney Lane, Ward End, Birmingham B8 2AS.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Tom Newing and Sons, Milford Haven.

CAPT G. DUDLEY

WINCHESTER (formerly of Milford Haven)

The first harbourmaster of the new oil port of Milford Haven, Captain Guilford Dudley, died at his home in Winchester on March 6th, aged 83.

Captain Dudley was 34 when he was appointed harbourmaster of the newly established Milford Haven Conservancy Board on March 1st, 1959, the board being the forerunner of the port authority.

During his 27 years at Milford Haven he became a well-known and highly respected member of the community, taking part in many activities, including the RNLI.

Having completed his pre-sea training at the School of Navigation, Southampton, in 1942, he went to sea as an officer with the Royal Mail Line at the age of 17, and was present at the D-Day landings.

He married Beryl in 1950.

He was a chief officer when he left the Royal Mail Line in 1954 to become assistant harbourmaster at Southampton, was promoted to deputy harbourmaster there in 1957 and two years later took up his appointment with the conservancy board, set up by special Act of Parliament to oversee the navigational facilities for the new oil port.

In 1975, he was appointed a Younger Brother of Trinity House and a Fellow of the Royal Institute of Navigation and was awarded the Queen’s Jubilee Medal in 1977 and the OBE in 1980. He retired to Winchester, aged 61, in 1986.

The funeral took place at Holy Trinity Church, Colden Common, Win-chester on March 19th.

Guilford was predeceased by his children Ted and Sue. He leaves to mourn: Beryl (wife); Helen Sheridan (daughter); Robert Dudley (son) plus 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Mr H. E. Clarke

Hakin

The death of Henry Edward Clarke (also known as Harry), of Woodbine Way, Hakin, occurred on May 2nd at Withybush Hospital. He was 83.

He started his working life in the fish market on Milford Haven Docks. He also worked at Murex, Marble Hall. He joined Esso as a refinery technician in 1957 and took retirement in 1982.

Harry served with the Royal Air Force, during the Second World War, and was stationed at RAF St Athan. During the war he served in Greece and Italy.

He was a very keen gardener, enjoyed European holidays and the beaches of Pembrokeshire and he loved the history and culture of Milford Haven.

Also he was a founder member of the Royal British Legion and chairman for many years.

Harry was dedicated and provided support for ex-servicemen in the community.

The funeral service took place at St Katherine’s and St Peter’s Church, Milford Haven and was officiated by Rev Derek Davies.

The bearers were Frank Stammers, Ernie Evans, Dougie Joyce and Mr Scriven.

Donations in lieu of flowers to the Paul Sartori Foundation, 31 Haven Road, Haverfordwest.

Mrs O. A. M. Mayhew

Milford Haven

The death occurred at Withybush Hospital on May 8th of Olga Alice May Mayhew. She was 89.

Originally from Milford Haven she was a housewife.

The principal mourners are Arthur Sidney Mayhew (husband); Roy and Brian Mayhew (sons); Maxine Mayhew (daughter-in-law); Darron and Anthony Mayhew (grandsons); Lauren, Rhys, Iestyn, Serin, (great grandchildren); Joanna and Samantha Mayhew (wives of grandsons).

The funeral took place at Hamilton Court Funeral Home, followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn, and was officiated by Martin Evans.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Tom Newing and Sons, Milford Haven.

Mr P. Andrews

Goodwick

The funeral of Paul Andrews took place on Friday, May 22nd, at St Peter’s Church in Goodwick, followed by interment at Llanwnda Cemetery. He died on May 17th, aged 74.

Born on February 11th, 1935 in Dyffryn, Davis Alun Paul Andrews was christened and confirmed at St Peter’s Church in Goodwick and later became a choir boy. He attended Goodwick primary school and later Fishguard grammar school. He won the Victor Ludorum on many occasions and represented the county in athletics, but it was cricket that he loved.

A sporting career at Loughborough University beckoned, but with declining health, Paul decided architecture would be a better bet.

He left Fishguard to study in Liverpool and after six years he travelled to London to work with Sir Basil Spence on such prestigious projects as Southampton University and Coventry Cathedral, where the Chapel of Unity was his project.

In 1960 Paul and Margaret were married and settled in Hampstead. Paul responded to an advert in the RIBA journal requesting an architect in Haverfordwest for the firm Phillip Hirst and Wyn Jones Partnership. The next 48 years were spent alongside Wyn and later in partnership with his son James.

In 1986 Paul had the honour of designing the Bardic chair for the National Eisteddfod, Fishguard.

Paul’s civic duties included serving on Tasker Milward Trust and he was a member of Fishguard and Goodwick Rotary club.

In 1990 he was appointed to the board of governors of Sir Thomas Picton School, where he became chairman.

Principal mourners were Margaret (wife); Helen and Gwynfor Howells, Kate and Graham Jones, (daughters and sons-in-law); James and Tammy Andrews (son and daughter-in-law); Rhys and Rhiannon Howells, Angharad, Bronwen, Carwyn and Llewelyn Jones, Benjamin and Jacob Andrews (grandchildren); Mair Parker, Hugh James and Margaret Lewis, Rosemary O’Sullivan (cousins); Brian Rowe and Richard and Gary James, various cousins and friends from Cardiff and Dyffryn; Richard and Julie Evans and Malcolm and Janet Thomas.

The bearers were Paul’s grandsons Rhys Howells, Carwyn and Llewelyn Jones, sons-in-law, Gwynfor and Graham, and friend David Fletcher.

Those unable to attend were: Margaret Evans (sister-in-law), Benjamin and Jacob Andrews (Texas, grandsons); David and Christine Evans (Canada). Also unable to attend were Paul’s close university friends, Geoff Holland, John Waldron and Robin Wolley.

Rev Brian Barnes officiated. The lesson was read by Rev John Roberts and Helen Howells. A poem was read by Kate Jones and James Andrews.

There were family flowers only, with donations in lieu for the Paul Sartori Foundation to Paul Jenkins and Sons, Feidr Castell, Fishguard, SA65 9BB, who also carried out the funeral arrangements.

Mr R. T. Cook

Milford Haven

The death of Roger Thomas Cook occurred at his home on May 2nd. He was 81.

Roger moved to Pembrokeshire 23 years ago from Sussex.

He was an inspector of taxes in Brighton but was delighted with a transfer to Haverfordwest tax office, from where he retired.

He was interested in sport from an early age, his father being Tommy Cook, the Brighton and Hove Albion player. He was also a cricket player for Sussex.

He joined Milford Haven Golf Club as soon as he moved to the area.

The family left to mourn and principal mourners are: Cilla (wife); Paul (son); Julie (daughter); Daniel (grandson); Phil and Ros (stepchildren); Ruby (sister-in-law); and David and Pat (unable to attend due to illness).

Many friends attended his funeral officiated by Rev Martin Evans at the crematorium.
