Mr. G. B. Mattson

Haverfordwest

A large gathering attended the funeral of George Brian Mattson at Parc Gwyn Crematorium on July 3rd.

Brian died suddenly on June 26th at the age of 70. He was the son of Percy and Anita Mattson. In his early years he was bought up by his mother and grandmother, Lilian Phillips of Jury Lane, and was later joined by four siblings, Gloria, Susan, Peter and Mandy. He was a Prendergast boy, living in the post-war prefabs and subsequently Scotchwell View.

In 1960 he married Maureen Ann Bowen and they first lived in the Forestry Commission houses at Canaston Bridge, before moving to Prospect Place and then to Scotchwell View, Prendergast. Brian and Ann raised three children, Diane, Tracy and David.

Brian was predeceased by their son Paul who died in December 1961. His remains will be interred with him.

Brian worked locally for many firms, starting with George Davies, builders merchants, Prendergast. He then worked in the Kraft Cheese Factory and Withybush Hospital.

Brian loved gardening and especially growing vegetables. He also enjoyed country pursuits, particularly fishing.

Brian’s greatest love by far was reserved for his family his grandchildren ensured he always remained young at heart.

The principal mourners are: Diane and Trevor (daughter and son-in-law); Tracy (daughter); David and Carroll (son and partner); Gareth, Gemma, Keith, Yana, Anita, Jessica, Fiona, Shaun, Charlotte and Richie (grandchildren); Luke-Ethan, Hannah-Jane, Steffan, Sanjay, Tyrone and Lexi-Ann (great grandchildren); Gloria and Susan Van-de-Cappelle (sisters); Peter and Margaret Mattson (brother and sister-in-law); Mandy and Derek Lewis (sister and brother in law); Derek and Sandra Mattson, Pauline Smith (nee Mattson), Alan and Wenda Gordon, Alison and Chloe Hancock (nee Gordon), Sarah Jones (nee Lewis), Lisa, Shannon and Jordan Van-de-Cappelle, Paul Van-de-Cappelle, Donna and Craig Mattson.

Unable to attend were Gloria Van-de-Cappelle (sister); Uncle David and Auntie Flo and family (Manchester); Jennifer and Judha David (niece); Alison Mattson; Paul Van-de-Cappelle (nephew); Mike Mattson, Steve Davies, Donald and Shirley Owens, Eric Mattson, John, Clare, Emma and Richie Smith, and David Benjamin.

The bearers were Gareth Mattson (grandson), Derek Lewis (brother-in-law); Aubrey John and Nick Jones (friends).

The officiating minister was Rev Paul Bartlett, and the funeral arrangements were carried out by Tom Newing and Sons, Milford Haven.

Mr. D. B. Gregg

Milford Haven

The death occurred at home of David Boyce Gregg, of Waterloo Road, Milford Haven on July 3rd. He was 80.

Originally from Belfast, Northern Ireland, he served an apprenticeship as a boilermaker at Harland and Wolfe Shipyard, and worked at many industrial constructions as a welder.

He was a keen golfer at Milford Haven golf club for more than 30 years, and secretary of GMB trade union for 30 years, retiring in April 2009.

Family left to mourn and principal mourners are: Hazel Gregg (wife); Sarah and David Jones (daughter and son-in-law); Rachel Jones (granddaughter); Owen Jones and Rhys Jones (grandsons). Unable to attend due to illness were William Gregg (brother) and Jean Gregg (sister-in-law).

The service was held at St David’s Church, Hubberston followed by interment at Milford Haven Cemetery. It was led by Rev Peter Jones.

The bearers were Frank Sprowell, Peter Sprowell, Alan Chase and Leighton Edwards (nephews).

Donations in lieu of flowers for ward ten, Withybush Hospital, may be sent to Sarah Jones, 121 Waterloo Road, Milford Haven.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Tom Newing and Sons, Milford Haven.

Mrs. E. J. Howells

Haverfordwest

The death occurred suddenly at her home of Elizabeth Joy Howells, of Fishguard Road, Haverfordwest on May 13th. She was 69.

Joy was born in Neyland to the late Frederick and Nesta Vaughan, moving to Haverfordwest after marrying Arthur. She worked for South Wales Electricity Board for many years until becoming a partner with her husband Arthur of A. D. Howells (haulage and plant contractor).

Family left to mourn and principal mourners are: Arthur (husband); Dawn and Phillip (daughter and partner); Vaughan (grandson) and other family and friends too numerous to mention.

A large gathering of family and friends attended the funeral service, which was held at Parc Gwyn and was led by Canon Geoffrey Gwyther.

The bearers were Vaughan Howells (grandson); Royce Howells (brother-in-law); Phillip Owen (daughter’s partner) and Mark Barrett.

There were immediate family flowers only, with donations if desired for Crossroads Pembrokeshire to Royce Howells, 4 Ramsey Drive, Milford Haven Pembrokeshire SA73 2RQ.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Roy Folland and Son, Haverfordwest.

Mr. T. P. Shinner

Milford Haven

The funeral took place recently of Trevor Pulford Shinner, of Cromwell Road, Milford Haven, who died at Withybush Hospital on June 14th.

Originally from Hakin, he worked for SWEB for 49 years and retired in 1993. He served two years of national service.

His main interests included gardening. He was an avid sports fan, and he also took a great interest in his grandsons’ education and sports achievements.

Family left to mourn and principal mourners are: Barbara May Shinner (wife); Julie and Susan (daughters); James (son-in-law); Shaun and Scott (grandchildren); Peter (Julie’s partner); Audrey and John, Reg and Owen, Freda and Trevor, Betty, Ann and Phil, Richard, Sheila and David (brothers, sisters and in-laws); plus many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Unable to attend were Stephen and Heather Blockwell, in Australia.

The funeral took place at St David’s Church, Hubberston, followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn. The service was led by Rev Chadwick and the bearers were Shaun and Scott (grandsons).

Donations in lieu of flowers are for the CCU, Withybush Hospital, Haverfordwest.

Mr. S. Rowley

Pembroke Dock

The death occurred on June 11th of Samuel Rowley, High Street, Pembroke Dock, aged 64. He was known as Sammy to his close family, and was born just outside Edinburgh. He had five brothers and three sisters.

Sammy joined the Royal Artillery when he was 17, and met his wife Myra in 1964 while he was stationed at Llanion Barracks. They were married in 1967 and had two sons, Andrew and Jason. Following their marriage they moved to Germany, where they spent more than 20 years. After 25 years of army service, the family returned to live in Pembroke Dock. He then worked as a radar operator at the Royal Artillery range at Manorbier, where he continued to work up until his death.

He was totally dedicated to his family and was always delighted to have his seven grandchildren around. His main interests included playing golf, travel, supporting the Scottish rugby team and tending his large garden.

Family left to mourn and principal mourners are: Myra (wife); Andrew and Michelle Rowley, Jason and Marie Rowley (sons and daughters-in-law); Jenna, Matthew, Hannah, Callum, Rebecca, Bradley and Caitlin (grandchildren); Jessie Fisher (mother); Peggy Parsons (mother-in-law); Sonny (brother); Tommy and Jessie Rowley, Billy and Margaret Rowley, John and Lorraine Rowley, Eric and Kathleen Rowley (brother and sisters-in-law); Margaret and George O’Hara, Elizabeth and Norman Hosie, Janice and Ronnie Higgins (sisters and brothers-in-law); John and Mary Rowley, Sonny and Charlotte Rowley (uncles and aunts); Peter and Kate Parsons, Roy and Nicky Parsons, Mark and Toni Parsons (brothers-in-law and wives); Rose and Malcolm Lewis, Pam and Keith Bowen, Jenny and Graham Thomas (sisters-in-law and husbands) together with cousins, nephews and nieces, great nephews and nieces and close friends to numerous to mention. Unable to attend were Jessie Fisher, Margaret and George O’Hara and Jenna Rowley.

A large gathering of family and friends attend the funeral at St Mary’s Church, Pembroke, followed by interment at Monkton cemetery. The service was led by Rev Roger Jones, and the bearers were Andrew Rowley, Jason Rowley, Peter Parsons, Roy Parsons, Mark Parsons, Malcolm Lewis, Martin Lewis, Graham Thomas and Gerald Bowen.

Donations in lieu for the British Heart Foundation may be sent to John Roberts and Son, Pembroke Dock, who also carried out the funeral arrangements.

Mr. K. J. Maclennan

Milford Haven

Kenneth John (Jock) Maclennan, of Trafalgar Road, Milford Haven, died at Withybush Hospital on June 21st.

Originally from Inverness, he worked for Phelps and Owens, of Milford Haven, and then he was a clerk of works for Pembrokeshire County Council.

During the war he was in the navy and served in Japan, Australia and the Far East as a chief petty officer.

Family left to mourn and principal mourners are: Joy and Miles (daughter and son-in-law); Anna and Sarah (granddaughters); Tommy, Euston, Dippie and Chicks (brothers in Inverness); plus friends.

The funeral service was held at Parc Gwyn on July 1st and was led by Canon John Davies.

There were family flowers only, with donations for Milford Haven Day Centre (Havenhurst) to Carol Duncan, 26 Prioryville, Milford Haven.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Tom Newing and Sons, Milford Haven.

Mr. G. M. Harries

Haverfordwest

The death has occurred at Withybush Hospital on June 18th of Griffith Michael Harries, MRCVS, of Dove Cottage, Woodholm Close, Haverfordwest. He was 83.

He was the youngest son of Mr and Mrs E Lloyd Harries, of Meardy Farm, Penycwm.

Michael was educated at Brawdy School and Haverfordwest Grammar School and graduated from the Royal Veterinary College, London, in 1948.

In 1950 he formed Nisbet and Harries which was very successful and is now known as the Fenton Veterinary Practice. He was held in very high regard by the farming community.

In 1952 he married Melville and they lived at Springfield, Fishguard Road, before moving to Beaver’s Lodge, Treffgarne, where he combined farming and part-time veterinary work. His main interests lay in all agricultural matters and he enjoyed all forms of sport.

In the 1970s he was appointed veterinary consultant to Pembrokeshire County Council and continued in this capacity until his retirement in 2000.

Above all he was a family man and was very proud of the achievements of his eight grandchildren.

Family left to mourn are: Melville Harries (wife); Annette Morris and Melinda Wood (daughters); Joanna and Michael Howe (daughter and son-in-law); Mr and Mrs Lloyd Harries and Mr and Mrs Raymond Harries (brothers and sisters-in-law); Michael Morris and Sara Hill (grandson and partner); Ross and Raechel Macleod (grandson and wife); Angela Morris, John Macleod, Catherine Macleod, John, Peter and Ben Howe (grandchildren); Erin May Macleod (great granddaughter).

Canon Colin Bowen officiated at a private service at Parc Gwyn. The bearers were Michael Morris, John Macleod, John and Ben Howe (grandsons).

There were family flowers only, with donations in lieu for ward ten, Withybush Hospital to Andrew Rees, of F. J. Rees, Portfield, who also carried out the funeral arrangements.
