Surrey (formerly of Amroth)

The funeral took place at Guildford Crematorium on September 16th of Ann Denise Turner (nee Cale), formerly of Amroth, following her death on September 5th at the age of 50.

She was the youngest daughter of David and Doreen Cale, of Amroth.

The chief mourners and family left to mourn are: Barry Turner (husband); Lisa, Tracy and Diana (daughters); Dominic, Chantelle and Paige (grandchildren); Peter Cale (brother); Carole Ralphs (niece); David and Chrissy Ralphs (great nephew and niece).

The bearers were Peter Cale (brother); Sean Ralphs (nephew); Paul Barton (son-in-law); and Andrew Collins (son-in-law).

Donations in lieu of flowers for a commemorative bench at Eastlake Nursing Home, where Ann worked for 16 years, may be sent to John Roberts and Sons, 51 Bush Street, Pembroke Dock, who also carried out the funeral arrangements.

Mr R. P. Lewis

Pembroke Dock

Ray Lewis died on September 7th at South Pembrokeshire Hospital aged 62. He had been battling cancer for the past 18 months.

Ray was a retired refinery operator, giving 39 years of service to Chevron after joining the company at the age of 18.

He is survived by Gary and Leanne (son and partner); Martin and Debbie (son and daughter-in-law); Blake, Callum, Rebecca and Harry (grandchildren); Pam and Mervyn, Andrew (sister and brothers-in-law); Paul and Mandy, Steven, Gareth and Jack, Helen and Pete (nephews and neices), plus many close friends.

A large gathering attended the funeral at St John’s Church, Pembroke Dock on September 18th followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn, Narberth. The bearers were Gary, Martin, Blake Lewis and David Evans.

There were family flowers only, with donations in lieu for Cancer Research and Diabetes UK, c/o John Roberts and Son, 51 Bush Street, Pembroke Dock, who carried out the funeral arrangements.

Mrs E. Higgins

Neyland

Elizabeth (Betty) Higgins died on September 29th at the Sunrise Retirement Home in Ajijic, Mexico, after a short illness. She was born in Honeyborough, Neyland, and was 86 years old.

Betty was one of three children and is survived by her younger sister Madeline. Her older sister Bertha died earlier this year.

A memorial service to celebrate her life was held at St Clement’s Church, Neyland, last Friday, led by Rev Paul Flavell.

Betty was the wife of Jim Higgins who served in the Royal Air Force all his life. The family travelled extensively, including two tours of duty in Northern Ireland and tours in Gibraltar, Aden and Singapore.

They had one child James, who is married to Kari. Betty is survived by them and their children Mark and Claire, Claire’s husband Eric and their son Cooper.

After leaving the RAF in 1975, Betty and Jim returned to Neyland where they enjoyed 21 happy years of retirement until Jim’s death in 1996.

During this period they travelled extensively to make regular and lengthy visits to their family in Canada where their son lived.

These visits continued after Jim’s death and when the Canadian family branch chose to retire to Mexico, that became Betty’s travel destination of choice.

Following a period of illness in 2008, Betty decided to move permanently to a retirement home in Mexico, to be close to her son and daughter-in-law, enabling them to visit her every day.

She was also visited by her grandchildren and the last great joy of her life occurred in March 2009 when she was introduced to her great-grandson Cooper James Dickson, son of Claire and Eric.

Seeing the baton passed on to a fourth generation of her family was the final seal on a long and varied life.

Mr G. R. Mitchell

Milford Haven

The death occurred at Withybush Hospital on September 21st of Gerald Roy Mitchell, of 22 John Lewis Street, Hakin, Milford Haven. He was 59.

A native of Milford, Gerald started his working life as a steel erector.

After breaking both of his wrists in a work accident he started welding and progressed to a welding inspector.

Throughout his working career Gerald travelled the world, reaching as far afield as Saudi Arabia.

In addition to his family, Gerald had many interests. He supported Manchester United, loved table tennis, darts, snooker and athletics.

Gerald loved his family, loved his work and was loyal to his friends and family alike.

This was evident by the hundreds that attended his funeral. Family and friends came from far and wide, including Canada, Australia, Cyprus and parts of the UK.

Principal mourners were: Lynn (wife); Kyle and Shelly (son and partner); Leah (daughter); Brenda and Fred (mother and father); Brian and Susan Mitchell (brother and sister-in-law); Tina and David Charnley (sister and brother-in-law); Joan Charnley (mother-in-law); Brian and Helen Charnley, Mark and Sheila Charnley, Lee and Jo Charnley (brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law); Clifford and Eileen Paines, Roy and Margaret Paines (aunts and uncles); plus cousins, nieces and nephews too numerous to mention.

The funeral took place at the Priory Road Methodist Church on September 25th, followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn, led by Alan Jenkins.

The bearers were: Brian Mitchell, David Charnley, Lee Charnley and Andrew Charnley.

There were family flowers only, with donations in lieu to ICU Withybush Hospital, Haverfordwest.

The funeral directors were Tom Newing and Sons, Milford Haven.

Mrs. S. E. Williams

Llandissilio

The funeral of Sarah Elonwy Williams (Lon), of Llandissilio, Clynderwen was held at Henllan Chapel, Henllan Amgoed, Whitland.

She died on September 9th at Morriston Hospital, aged 72.

She was born in Rosebush and was the second daughter of six children to George and Mair Francis. She went to Maenclochog School, and later worked as a cook in Penfordd School.

Sarah then worked in Tenby where she met her late husband Ernest Williams, and married at Capel Mair, Llanfallteg.

They had four children Jennifer, Anne, David and Lyn and had four granddaughters Khadine, Stephanie, Ffion and Sara and a great grandchild, Niall.

The principal mourners are: Jennifer and Dave, Anne and John (daughters and sons-in-law); David and Pauline, Lyn and Sian (sons and daughters-in-law); Khadine, Stephanie, Ffion and Sara (granddaughters); Niall (great grandson).

The service was led by Rev Geoffrey Eynon and the bearers were Selwyn Thomas, David Morris, Bernard Bowen and Richard Davies.

Floral tributes were from family only with donations in lieu for Brynconin School, Llandissilio, c/o Mr Ken Davies and Sons, funeral director, Clynderwen, who also carried out the funeral arrangements.

Mr G. Cole

Freshwater East

The death occurred on September 16th at Withybush Hospital of George Cole, of Lake Farm, Freshwater East. He was 85.

Born in Cosheston, he grew up and farmed for many years in Freshwater East for his father at Little Portclew Farm until he married in 1953 and moved to Lake Farm where he continued to farm until his retirement.

The family left to mourn are his wife Olive; daughters and sons-in-law Julia and Philip, Janet and Paul; son and daughter-in-law Andrew and Suzanne; grandchildren Martin and wife Bex, Gary and girlfriend Jo, Kelly, Andrew, Georgia, Shannon, Seren, Saffrwn; great grandchildren Erin and Theo, sister Maisie; brother and sister-in-law Fred and Joan, together with family and friends too numerous to mention.

After a short service at the Church of St Faith and St Tyfai, Lamphey interment followed at St Michael’s Cemetery, Pembroke. The service was led by Rev Martin Cox, and the bearers were Martin and Gary Owens (grandsons), Lloyd Griffiths, Gordon Harries, Roger Minchin and David Phillips.

There were family flowers only with donations if desired to Cancer Research c/o Mrs J. Murphy, Lake Farm, Freshwater East, Pembroke SA71 5LD.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by John Roberts and Son, Bush Street, Pembroke Dock.

Mr W. B. P. Evans

Llandeloy

The funeral service took place on September 28th of William Beynon Price Evans, of Gorwel, Llandeloy.

He died on September 23rd at Ridgeway Nursing Home, Llawhaden.

A carpenter by trade, Beynon took over the family farm at Lower Vanley, Llandeloy following his marriage to Myfanwy Thomas in 1958 until their retirement in 1986 when they moved to Gorwel.

He attended Trefgarn Owen School as a child and was a member of Trefgarn Owen Chapel. In his youth he was a member of the Aelwyd in Hayscastle and competed as a tenor in a quartet. In retirement Beynon’s hobbies included carpentry, holidaying and gardening.

The funeral service was held at Trefgarn Owen Chapel, and was followed by interment at Noddfa Newton Cemetery, Hayscastle. The service was led by his minister, Rev Geoffrey Eynon who was assisted by Rev Dr Cerwyn Davies, Rev Emlyn Jones, Rev Gwyn Rogers and Mrs Marguerite Price.

The organist was Cerwyn Davies, and the bearers were Martin Davies, Glyn Jones, Martin Jones, Neville Davies, Dilwyn James and Meurig Harries.

Principal mourners were: Myfanwy Evans (wife); Nancy Grant (sister); Evelyn Evans (sister-in-law); Stephen Grant, Geraint and Jayne Evans, Rhiannon Evans (neices and nephews); Tomos Evans (great-nephew); Erenie Thomas, Leslie Evans, Ruth Lamb, Eirlys Morse, William and Glenys Davies, Phillip and Susan Owen, Michael Price, Leslie and Marguerite Price (cousins); together with other relatives, friends and neighbours too numerous to mention.

Unable to attend were Simon Grant (nephew) and Morfydd Charles (cousins).

There were family flowers only with donations in lieu if desired for the Cemetery Upkeep Fund at Noddfa Newton c/o Mr. Len Davies, Blaen-y-Delyn, Hayscastle.

Pembroke Dock

On September 17th, St Mary’s Church was filled with family, friends and neighbours to pay their respects to Catherine (Cathy) Finnegan, of 43 St Teilos Road, Pembroke Dock, formerly of Ballyloughane, Co. Limerick, Ireland. She died at Withybush Hospital on September 10th, aged 75.

The principal mourners were: Patrick (husband); Anthony and Mandy (son and daughter-in-law); Bernard and Sheila (son and partner); Bridie and Morgan, Tina and Raymond, Tanya and Neil (daughters and sons-in-law); Emma, Kirsty, Liam, Mathew, Lance, Sarah, Jason, Nathan, Kelly, Amy, Katie and Gareth (grandchildren); Joshuah (great-grandson); together with many other relatives.

Cathy’s main interests included family life, friends, TV, playing cards, bingo, quizzes, reading and knitting.

The bearers were Anthony, Bernard (sons); Raymond, Neil and Morgan (sons-in-law), John (brother-in-law); Liam, Mathew, Jason, and Nathan (grandsons).

There were family flowers only, with donations being sent to the Parish Development Fund through Father Patrick Fitzgerald.
