Mr Robin Challis Thomas

Carew (formerly of Pembroke)

After a recent illness, the death occurred peacefully at Withybush General Hospital on June 1st, of Mr Robin Challis Thomas, of Barletts Well Road, Carew, he was 39.

Born in Pembroke Dock on August 8th, Robin was brought up in Coldwell Terrace, The Green, Pembroke, the eldest of six children to Phillip and Bridget Thomas and Kathleen Sheldon.

Growing up, Robin enjoyed shooting, fishing, days out on his boat, Thor, and practical jokes with his three sisters and two brothers.

At the age of 11, Robin’s father Phillip and Peter James, set up the Pembroke Dock Weight-lifting club, where Robin excelled himself, going on to win both the Welsh and British weight-lifting titles (some records of which still stand today). At the age of 15, he qualified for the commonwealth games, but after suffering a dislocated elbow, had to retire from the sport.

At the age of 16, he started work as an apprentice scaffolder for GKN Kwikform, working alongside his father Philip. He continued to work prior to his illness. Over the years Robin gained experience working on all the local refineries and for a short while, he set up the family business with his father, trading as Budget Scaffolding. During this time, he had the opportunity to work on a number of large sites away from home, including the Bullring, Birmingham and Bath university, to name but a few. He will be fondly remembered as a hard working, experienced, well respected colleague.

In 1992, Robin met his future wife, Tracy and in 1993, they moved to Bartletts Well Road. Over the years, they had four children together, Kerry, Brittany, Jack and Lexi, all of whom he adored. Robin was a family man at heart and spent every spare moment enjoying time with his family.

Robin had fond memories of holidays to Rhodes, Greece and it was there in 2006, that he and Tracey got married.

In December 2010, Robin was taken ill with a blood clot in his leg, further tests revealed that he had cancer. Robin bravely fought his illness with dignity and strength and his family will always love him for this.
