Pre-season football: Haverfordwest County 2-1 Aberystwyth Town

A stunning second half winner from Danny Williams helped round off a positive week for Haverfordwest County as they overcame Aberystwyth Town at The Bridge Meadow yesterday.

The Bluebirds led at the break after Williams had struck from close range, and the same player crashed a 25-yard shot into the top corner to win it in the second half, after Geoff Kellaway has fortuitously levelled for the visitors.

It was an admittedly understrength Aber team, especially given the club had played less than 24 hours earlier in a friendly against Telford United, but the home side themselves were without club captain Sean Pemberton and striker Lee Trundle - and took the chance to give a run out to a number of new or young players.

Former Taffs Well keeper Stephen Hill played a half between the sticks, as did new signing Kyle Stuart, while prospects like Martin Carroll and Kurtis Hicks appeared in the second half.

Haverfordwest started well and the first clear chance fell to Alaric Jones from a Danny Williams cross - but Aber keeper Alex Pennock saved from point blank range.

At the other end, Kellaway went close with a header and Eliott Anssi fired narrowly wide.

But the deadlock was broken by The Bluebirds as the impressive Tom Dyson teed up Leon Luby - and after the full back's effort was parried by Pennock - Williams made no mistake with the rebound.

Shortly after the break Aber levelled as midfielder Lee Jenkins drove towards the area before his shot took a wicked deflection off Kellaway and left Hill wrong footed.

Then came the super winner from Williams though, as he cut onto his right foot and unleashed a powerful long range shot that was still rising when it hit the top corner.

Sub Jack Wilson also struck the woodwork and Steffan Williams found the net in spectacular style, only to be ruled offside, but it was still another positive 90 minutes for The Bluebirds following their big win over Goodwick in midweek.

Cresser said afterwards: "I'm pleased with another win but it is only a single pre-season step along the road to a tough Welsh League programme and we will keep our heads down, work hard and keep gaining a better understanding of where we want to go."
