It has been a great summer for Wiseman’s Bridge Rowing Club.

The season got a super start as they hosted their 2018 league race for the Welsh Sea Rowing Association. Not only was the event attended by clubs in Wales, but this year included teams from Italy. Wiseman’s Bridge have attended the Fixed Seat European Rowing Championships, and this year returned the favour to Italian teams.

The club took part in The Ocean to City Racing Event in Cork. Ocean to City is Ireland’s very own long-distance rowing race attracting hundreds of participants annually. They were joined by members from Mumbles and Aberaeron Rowing Clubs to take part in the spectacular 28km ocean race, finishing with a warm welcome in Cork city centre.

It’s not only overseas that Wiseman’s like to find a challenge, they recently rowed around Caldy Island, calling at Castle Beach in Tenby on the way back.

More recently, the club supplied the boats to support the Long Course Weekend Swim. Several club members competed - and many also cycled in the Carten 100 event.

Simon Collings, Club Chairman, has led the way in making rowing accessible to all. He has recruited a new group into the rowing club with the ‘Learn to Row’ campaign. Members from Saundersfoot Strollers started learning to row on indoor machines through the winter and at the beginning of the season, took to the water. They now enjoy club nights and social rows, and have managed to row through St. Catherine’s Island and ‘The Gap’ at Monkstone Point.

Simon is also a volunteer at Tenderfoot in Saundersfoot, and has taken the club further by supporting Insport Disability Wales. Wiseman’s Bridge also recently took part in training sessions at Pembroke Leisure Center, where 32 participants had to opportunity to train, coached by qualified club members.

Because of Simon’s hard work, the club had a special presentation from Insport Disability Wales, for showing commitment to developing an inclusive open club, in which all persons regardless of ability, gender or age are able to participate.

And the rowers haven’t let up on their training, with club nights three times a week, and social rows at every opportunity.
