Goodwick United 5
Prendergast Villa 0

Goodwick United crushed Prendergast Villa by hitting them for five goals without reply in the only game played in the top-flight on Saturday.

The Phoenix Park despite cutting-up by the end of the clash played remarkably well as Bernie Armstrong’s troops got the new year off to a perfect start.

The home side had to wait until the 40th minute before they broke the deadlock. Johnny Horgan latched onto a cross and lashed home from inside the box.

On the stroke of half-time and Goodwick doubled the lead. Striker Steve Lewis neatly chipped Villa stand-in goalkeeper Sean Halpin.

It was backs-to-the-wall stuff for Villa in the second period. And there was no surprise when the hosts extended the lead shortly after the break. Darren Devonald planted a header past Halpin and five minutes later, Devonald firmly headed home his second of the match to put Goodwick in the driving seat.

On 70 minutes, the home side were awarded a penalty by referee Alan Boswell as substitute Richard Bookless was upended in the box. Nigel Delaney duly smashed the resulting 12-yard effort, crashing into the back of the net.

This was Goodwick’s seventh win of the campaign, now lying in sixth spot, while Prendergast Villa slipped to their ninth defeat of the season and sit in tenth.
