Senior Cup semi-final

Goodwick United 2

Milford United 0

SENIOR Cup holders Goodwick United secured a comfortable two-goal victory against Milford United at the Conygar Bridge Meadow.

Goals in the first half by Jonny Horgan and Rhys Dalling ensured that the Phoenix Lads will play in the final for the second year in a row.

Nine minutes into the clash, Goodwick United were desperately unlucky not to take the lead when left sided midfielder Horgan struck a sweet right footed volley from the edge of the box that beat Robins’ goalkeeper Andrew Fairbairn but cannoned off the far post.

However, the cup holders took the lead in the 26th minute, good work down the right led to Rob Morgans crossing to Horgan, the left sided midfielder made no mistake with a clincial far post finish.

The Phoenix Lads extended the lead in the 37th minute, a route one ball fell to Dalling, the deadly striker showed good composure slotting the ball past the advancing Fairbairn.

Nigel Delaney’s Goodwick United outfit were good value for their two-goal cushion at half time.

Ten minutes after the break the Robins came close to scoring, Chris Thompson striking a beautiful curling shot from the corner of the 18 yard box that forced a finger-tip save from James Gwilt.

Virtually on full time Rob Morgans slotted home from close range, but the effort was ruled out for off side  - but it made no difference as Nigel Delaney’s Goodwick United outfit ran out comfortable victors and can look forward to trying and retain the trophy.

The final will take place at the Conygar Bridge Meadow Stadium on Saturday, April 9.
