Division Three West A:

Neyland 39-31 Laugharne

It was fitting end to the playing career of one of Pembrokeshire rugby's best performers over the past decade last night as Steve Martin signed off as player coach of Neyland with a win.

Martin, who returned to the All Blacks two years ago after spells as captain of Narberth and as a player with Llanelli in the Welsh Premiership, will leave the club this summer and although he intends to continue in coaching, has confirmed he is hanging up the boots.

Over the past two years the club have brought through some promising youngsters and that was evident last night as the home side beat third-placed Laugharne after trailing 17-5 at half time.

The Cocklemen held the edge in the first half as they scored tries by Tom Davies (2) and Dorian Harries, one converted by centre Tom Jameson – but the All Blacks stormed back after the break.

Twins Jimmy and Scott Buirds shared three of their tries, two of them for Jimmy, with others by prop Luke Dawes, centre Alex Codd and coach Martin, who also landed three conversions and a penalty.

The visitors stayed in the contest with two penalty tries and will finish in third despite the defeat, while Neyland end up sixth, level on points wit fith placed Haverfordwest.

"It has been a pleasure and an honour to coach the club that I grew up watching," Martin told Telegraph Sport.

"Personally, it was also the best possible way to finish my career with all my family watching and being able to help the boys get a deserved win.

"It has been a long two years but one in which I have thoroughly enjoyed. I wish Neyland RFC all the best for the future."
