It was a day that pupils at Neyland Community School will never forget.

Having won through their Pembrokeshire and West Wales regional rounds, he School football team represented Swansea City last week at the UK Premier League finals in the King Power Stadium in Leicester - against schools representing each of the other 19 Premiership clubs from regions in England.

And at the home of the 2015/16 Premier League champions, the boys did themselves proud, only missing out on a final place after a dramatic penalty shoot out with Tottenham Hotspur.

The team were picked up by an official club team bus last Tuesday, closely followed by another bus full of parents and supporters, and at their hotel they were officially presented with their Swansea City team strips.

The tournament took place on Wednesday, and under the guidance of teacher and coach Ricky Bowen and Neyland FC's Martin Watkins, the side kicked of a group consisting on themselves, West Brom, Huddersfield, Arsenal and Everton

Only the winner progressed to the last four, and Bowen's young charges got the perfect start as goals from Ben and Joe Gale gave them a 2-0 win over Everton.

The next game was against a talented Arsenal side and again Ben Gale struck to secure a 1-0 victory - but mistakes and missed chances cost the team against Huddersfield as they went down 2-0.

"That was a big wake up call for the boys," Bowen told Telegraph Sport.

"We had a talk after the game though and went into the West Brom match knowing a win would guarantee us a place in the semi finals."

And the talking to worked - with a wonder strike from Charlie Hewitt, that went down a storm after being filmed and posted on Facebook, alongside goals from Joe Gale and Ashley Watkins, sealing a 3-0 scoreline and a group win.

It set up that semi final with Spurs, and a tense, committed affair ended 0-0 after extra time.

Then came the most amazing penalty shoot out, with the spot kicks going through both teams (6-a-side) twice before Tottenham prevailed 13-12.

"It was a fantastic day," added Bowen.

"The performances were superb and the boys did their teachers, coaches, parents, school, club and community proud."

Bowen also thanked Martin for his help and the parents who travelled up to offer their support.
