Australia 20 Wales 19

THERE was yet more heartbreak for Wales after they came so close to breaking their southern hemisphere duck only to be undone by poor discipline.

A penalty with five minutes left by Australia outside-half Berrick Barnes proved to be the difference in Sydney after Wales full back Leigh Halfpenny’s effort made it 19-17.

Number eight Ryan Jones’ converted try with just over quarter of an hour to go gave Wales the lead for the first time.

But they allowed the Wallabies back into the game almost immediately when Australia centre Rob Horne was allowed to score his unconverted try all to easily.

Australia scorers: Try – Rob Horne, Penalties – B Barnes (5)

Wales scorers: Try – Ryan Jones, Conversion – Leigh Halfpenny, Penalties – L Halfpenny (4)

Referee: Craig Joubert (South Africa)

Argus star man: David Pocock
