Talk on 'Attracting Butterflies' by Carrie Thomas

Members of the Newcastle Emlyn based Hardy Plant Society met recently to hear an enthusiastic, illustrated talk by Swansea based Carrie Thomas on how to attract a range of butterflies into the garden. It focussed not only on nectar providers, but also on the vegetation needs of caterpillars and pupae.

Newport Garden Club To Derbyshire and back in one evening -- that was the experience of the Garden Club last Tuesday as Judy Coggins took them on a virtual tour of Chatsworth House Gardens with the help of slides. It was a historical journey through 400 years of garden design. Visit in late May, she said: "The laburnum arch is in full bloom, the azaleas are all out and the bluebells are still in flower."

Garden visit to Dyffryn Fernant, Pembs.

The Newcastle Emlyn based Branch of the Hardy Plant Society recently visited Dyffryn Fernant near Fishguard. Members were rewarded by six acres of mature, but ever evolving garden, sited at the edge of a valley. A red painted farmhouse and rustic farm buildings had all been incorporated into a cottage garden style of planting. Swathes of Verbena bonariensis jostled with yellow Achillea. Pots of tender Canas, Lilies and Aeoniums were sited by paths which led to a wild flower meadow with Umbellifers and Scabious. Other features included pond, stream, bog garden and newly planted grass area together with statuary, some specially commissioned, all set in a dramatic landscape.
